What was previously only teased at the Erzbergrodeo is now a reality. KTM presents its version of the automated manual transmission called AMT.

KTM AMT: Automatic with Centrifugal Clutch

The new AMT from KTM allows the rider to choose between two modes: a manual mode (M-mode) and a fully automatic mode (A-mode). While in A-mode, the bike performs gear changes autonomously, riders in M-mode can still shift manually - but without operating a manual clutch. The rider can shift using the familiar shift lever on the left side of the engine or via the paddle on the left switch cube.

The AMT additionally brings extra ease in everyday life, especially when starting on inclines, accelerating, or maneuvering at low speeds. Thanks to the centrifugal clutch and the simple operation, the rider will never risk stalling the engine.

Gear shifts in the shortest possible time

The AMT operates precisely and efficiently by executing gear shifts via an electromechanical actuator that rotates the shift drum within 50 milliseconds. This speed is comparable to that of a traditional transmission equipped with QUICKSHIFTER+. According to KTM, the AMT transmission has been designed to maintain the proportions of the conventional transmission and approximately its weight as well.

Park mode prevents unwanted rolling away

Unlike conventional motorcycle gearboxes, the AMT features the gear sequence P - N - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6, with P acting as PARK to prevent unintended rolling thanks to a pawl in the gearbox. A manual roll-away lock (i.e., handbrake) is therefore not necessary.

Both PARK and NEUTRAL can only be selected using the shift paddle on the handlebar's shift cube, regardless of whether the engine is running or not. To engage the first gear, the front or rear brakes must be applied.

In just 50 milliseconds, the gearbox is supposed to shift gears.

KTM AMT in Selected Models

The AMT transmission also offers numerous setup options. Riders can combine different shift modes and riding modes to optimally adapt their machine to their needs. KTM will initially offer the AMT for selected models but plans to add more options in the coming years.

Conclusion and Comparison with the Competition

In recent months, everything has revolved around automated gearboxes. Honda, Yamaha, BMW, and now KTM—each manufacturer offers its own version of this riding aid. KTM also showcases its own solutions.

Instead of relying on actuators to operate the clutch (as used by other manufacturers), KTM installs a centrifugal clutch, similar to those found in scooters. The only other manufacturer that uses a comparable system is MV Agusta with the Smart Clutch System (SCS) – but as we know, the Italian manufacturer is now also part of Pierer Mobility. So, it's possible that they drew inspiration from the technology in Varese.
