KTM 390 Adventure 2020 vs. KTM 890 Adventure R 2022

The KTM 390 Adventure 2020 and the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 are both enduro motorcycles with different specifications and features.

Starting with the engine and drive train, the KTM 390 Adventure 2020 has a single-cylinder engine with a bore of 89 mm and a stroke of 60 mm. It produces 44 HP of engine power and 37 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 has a twin-cylinder engine with a bore of 90.7 mm and a stroke of 68.8 mm. It delivers a much higher engine power of 105 HP and torque of 100 Nm. Both models have an electric starter and a chain transmission.

In terms of suspension, both motorcycles feature upside-down telescopic forks at the front, with the KTM 390 Adventure having a 43 mm diameter and 170 mm of travel, while the KTM 890 Adventure R has a 48 mm diameter and 240 mm of travel. The rear suspension on both models is provided by WP and offers 177 mm of travel for the KTM 390 Adventure and 240 mm of travel for the KTM 890 Adventure R.

The chassis of both motorcycles is made of chromium-molybdenum and has a tubular frame type. They also have a similar rake angle of around 63.5-63.7 degrees. However, the KTM 890 Adventure R has a load-bearing engine frame, which enhances its off-road capabilities.

In terms of braking, the KTM 390 Adventure 2020 has a single disk front brake, while the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 is equipped with double disk front brakes. Both models come with advanced rider assistance systems such as ABS and cornering ABS. The KTM 890 Adventure R also offers additional features like riding modes, ride by wire, and traction control.

On the other hand, the KTM 890 Adventure R has a front tire diameter of 21 inches and a rear tire diameter of 18 inches, with a longer wheelbase of 1528 mm. The seat height is higher at 880 mm, and the dry weight with ABS is 196 kg. The KTM 890 Adventure R also has a larger fuel tank capacity of 20 liters compared to the 14.5 liters of the KTM 390 Adventure.

In terms of strengths, the KTM 390 Adventure 2020 is praised for its powerful engine, optional quickshifter, adjustable suspension, high-quality electronics package, and its ability to provide a fun riding experience on any surface. On the other hand, the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 is appreciated for its off-road capable chassis, harmonious ergonomics (especially for tall riders), agile handling, powerful engine, comprehensive electronics package, and features like cornering ABS and finely controllable brakes.

As for weaknesses, the KTM 390 Adventure 2020 is considered somewhat compact for tall riders. The KTM 890 Adventure R 2022, on the other hand, has a standard seat that is rather hard padded, a seat height that may be challenging for small riders, moderate wind and weather protection, and some useful features like the Quickshifter+ that come at an extra cost.
