KTM 790 Adventure 2020 vs. KTM 1290 Super Adventure S 2022

The KTM 790 Adventure 2020 is equipped with an inline engine, while the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S 2022 features a V2 engine. The 790 Adventure has a bore of 88 mm and a stroke of 65.7 mm, while the 1290 Super Adventure S has a bore of 108 mm and a stroke of 71 mm. In terms of power, the 790 Adventure produces 95 HP, while the 1290 Super Adventure S boasts 160 HP. The torque output of the 790 Adventure is 88 Nm, while the 1290 Super Adventure S delivers 138 Nm.

Both models have an electric start and chain transmission. They also have 2 cylinders, but differ in displacement, with the 790 Adventure having 799 cc and the 1290 Super Adventure S having 1301 cc.

In terms of suspension, both models feature a telescopic fork with a diameter of 43 mm at the front and a monoshock with adjustable preload at the rear. The suspension travel is also the same for both models, measuring 200 mm.

The chassis of both bikes is made of chromium-molybdenum and has a tubular frame. The rake angle of the 790 Adventure is 64.1 degrees, while the 1290 Super Adventure S has a rake angle of 65.3 degrees.

Both models are equipped with dual-disc front brakes. The 790 Adventure has a 21-inch front tire diameter and a 150 mm rear tire width with an 18-inch rear tire diameter. On the other hand, the 1290 Super Adventure S has a 19-inch front tire diameter and a 170 mm rear tire width with a 17-inch rear tire diameter.

In terms of dimensions and weights, the 790 Adventure has a wheelbase of 1509 mm, a seat height of 830 mm (adjustable up to 850 mm), and a dry weight of 189 kg (with ABS). The fuel tank capacity is 20 liters. On the other hand, the 1290 Super Adventure S has a wheelbase of 1560 mm, a seat height of 849 mm (adjustable up to 869 mm), and a dry weight of 220 kg (with ABS). The fuel tank capacity is 23 liters.

Both models come with advanced rider assistance systems such as ABS, riding modes, ride-by-wire, and traction control. However, the 1290 Super Adventure S offers additional features like electronically adjustable suspension, ABS for curves, cruise control, and adaptive cruise control (ACC).

In terms of strengths, the 790 Adventure offers a motor with different modes and character, extremely high chassis stability, impeccable brakes, tremendous off-road capabilities, and low average fuel consumption. On the other hand, the 1290 Super Adventure S boasts a very sporty and refined V2 powertrain, extremely playful behavior despite its high weight, comfortable and easy-to-ride seating position, good brakes including ABS in curves, comprehensive electronic package, adaptive cruise control (ACC), and a clear and well-structured instrumentation with a huge 7-inch display.

However, the 790 Adventure has a less attractive pricing policy and the original seat does not have the ideal shape. On the other hand, the 1290 Super Adventure S has an additional cost for the gear shift assistant, an idiosyncratic appearance, and a tight seat.
