Si l'on considère le point de départ de la famille KTM Duke, la 690 Duke représente un progrès incroyable. Malgré toute la technologie embarquée, elle reste une moto très légère et peut presque être considérée comme un jouet (dans le bon sens du terme). Seule sa position de conduite divise les opinions, car les supermotos d'autrefois sont devenues avec la Duke 4 en 2012 une naked bike presque docile avec une position de conduite orientée vers la roue avant. L'avantage : le quotidien et les longues randonnées ne devraient pas poser de problème sur la Duke actuelle.

Conduire vite, c'est possible, mais c'est fatigant. Le guidon haut est contre-productif sur la piste de course et demande beaucoup d'efforts physiques. Même avec le châssis WP, la MT-09 n'arrive pas à se hisser au niveau de la Street Triple R. Elle ne peut donc pas être utilisée comme une moto de course.
