Overview - BMW S 1000 R 2021 vs BMW S 1000 XR 2021

The BMW S 1000 R 2021 and the BMW S 1000 XR 2021 are two models from BMW's motorcycle lineup that offer different riding experiences.

Starting with the BMW S 1000 R 2021, it is a naked bike that boasts a powerful engine with 165 horsepower and 114 Nm of torque. The engine is an in-line 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, and liquid-cooled, providing excellent performance on the road. The fuel system is injection-based, and the transmission is chain-driven. The bike features a twin-tube aluminum frame, which contributes to its lightweight and agile handling. The suspension consists of an upside-down telescopic fork at the front with 120 mm of travel and a swing arm with a monoshock at the rear with 117 mm of travel. Both the front and rear suspensions offer adjustable compression, preload, and rebound settings, allowing riders to fine-tune their riding experience. The braking system consists of double disc brakes at the front with a diameter of 320 mm and four-piston radial calipers. The bike is equipped with advanced rider assistance systems such as ABS, hill start assist, riding modes, cornering ABS, ride by wire, traction control, and anti-wheelie. The dimensions and weights of the BMW S 1000 R 2021 include a front tire width of 120 mm, a front tire diameter of 17 inches, a rear tire width of 190 mm, a rear tire diameter of 17 inches, a wheelbase of 1450 mm, a seat height of 830 mm, a kerb weight of 199 kg (with ABS), and a fuel tank capacity of 16.5 liters.

On the other hand, the BMW S 1000 XR 2021 is a sport touring motorcycle that shares many similarities with the S 1000 R. It also features a powerful in-line 4-cylinder engine with 165 horsepower and 114 Nm of torque. The engine type, fuel system, transmission, and cooling system are the same as the S 1000 R. However, the XR model offers a more comfortable riding experience with its electronic chassis that has automatic recognition of the load condition. The front suspension has a longer travel of 150 mm, and the rear suspension also has 150 mm of travel. Both suspensions offer adjustable compression, preload, and rebound settings. The frame type is a twin-tube load-bearing engine design, which enhances the bike's stability and handling. The braking system, assistance systems, and dimensions and weights are similar to the S 1000 R, with the only notable differences being a wheelbase of 1552 mm, a seat height of 840 mm, a kerb weight of 226 kg (with ABS), and a larger fuel tank capacity of 20 liters.

In terms of strengths, the BMW S 1000 R 2021 is praised for its powerful engine, good brakes, comfortable ergonomics, and the availability of high-performance optional extras. It is also considered a great all-rounder, suitable for various riding styles and situations. On the other hand, the BMW S 1000 XR 2021 is commended for its riding modes that allow for different response behaviors, a rev-happy four-cylinder engine with a broad usable rev band, and a well-balanced vehicle, even with a pillion passenger, thanks to its electronic chassis with automatic load recognition. The XR model also offers good brakes.

However, both models have their weaknesses. The BMW S 1000 R 2021 is criticized for its quickshifter, which is good but not perfect, and its sound, which is still a bit intrusive. Some riders also experience vibrations in the handlebars. On the other hand, the BMW S 1000 XR 2021 has a narrow knee angle on long tours, which may be uncomfortable for tall riders. The suspension damping is not sensitive enough, making it difficult to achieve a truly comfortable setup. Additionally, the XR model has a high fuel consumption.

In conclusion, the BMW S 1000 R 2021 and the BMW S 1000 XR 2021 are both powerful and capable motorcycles, but they cater to different riding preferences. The S 1000 R is a naked bike that offers a versatile and thrilling riding experience, while the S 1000 XR is a sport touring motorcycle that prioritizes comfort and long-distance riding capabilities.

Pros and Cons in comparison

Pros and Cons in comparison

BMW S 1000 R 2021

BMW S 1000 R 2021

It's really impressive how BMW always manages to make good motorbikes even better. The sporty S 1000 R with M package and carbon rims looks a bit threatening at first. But even in 2021, the S 1000 R serves up high-tech and performance in a grandiose, usable dosage. The machine rides precisely, handles well but is not tippy. The engine fires out of the corners, but does not overtax. A damn fast motorbike!

Powerful engine

good brakes

comfortable ergonomics

high-priced but high-performance optional extras

simple operation but still very fast

great all-rounder.

Quickshifter good, but not perfect, sound still a bit intrusive

still with vibrations in handlebars

BMW S 1000 XR 2021

BMW S 1000 XR 2021

The BMW S 1000 XR offers a pleasant touring motorbike on the basis of a super sports bike. Sounds like a compromise - but rides like a spot-on development. The motorbike is practical and mature. Wind and weather protection are very good, integration from the mobile phone is well tested and intuitive, and the engine is simply always a joy to ride. The chassis adapts well to the load condition, but it never becomes sensitive and really comfortable. The seat comfort is good, but the knee angle becomes a bit acute on long tours. Nevertheless, this is a great motorbike that you like to ride sportily, but also very far.

Riding modes change response behaviour suitable for practical use

great rev-happy four-cylinder engine with a broad usable rev band

well-balanced vehicle - also with pillion passenger - thanks to electronic chassis with automatic recognition of load condition

good brakes

Knee angle on long tours a bit narrow for tall people

suspension damping not sensitive enough - no really comfortable setup possible

consumption high
