Overview - Ducati Monster 1200 2014 vs Ducati Monster SP 2023
The Ducati Monster 1200 model year 2014 and the Ducati Monster SP model year 2023 are both naked bikes produced by Ducati. While they share some similarities in terms of their technical specifications, there are also notable differences between the two models.
In terms of engine power, the Ducati Monster 1200 2014 boasts a more powerful engine with 135 HP compared to the Ducati Monster SP 2023, which has 111 HP. This means that the Monster 1200 2014 may offer a more exhilarating and thrilling riding experience, especially in terms of acceleration and top speed. However, the Monster SP 2023 compensates for this lower power output with its lively and high-torque engine, which can provide excellent low-end and mid-range performance.
When it comes to torque, the Monster 1200 2014 has a higher torque rating of 118 Nm compared to the Monster SP 2023, which has 93 Nm. This means that the Monster 1200 2014 may offer better pulling power and acceleration, particularly in situations where a strong torque output is required, such as overtaking or climbing steep hills. However, the Monster SP 2023's torque rating is still respectable and should provide sufficient power for most riding scenarios.
In terms of displacement, the Monster 1200 2014 has a larger engine with a displacement of 1198 ccm compared to the Monster SP 2023, which has a displacement of 937 ccm. The larger displacement of the Monster 1200 2014 may contribute to its higher power and torque output, as well as potentially providing a more robust and muscular feel during acceleration. However, the Monster SP 2023's smaller displacement may result in improved fuel efficiency and agility, making it more suitable for urban riding and maneuvering through tight spaces.

Both models feature upside-down telescopic forks for their front suspension. However, the Monster 1200 2014 utilizes Kayaba suspension, while the Monster SP 2023 features Öhlins suspension. Öhlins is known for producing high-quality suspension components, and this upgrade may result in improved handling, stability, and overall ride comfort for the Monster SP 2023. Additionally, the Monster SP 2023's swing arm rear suspension, also from Öhlins, may further enhance its overall performance and ride quality.
In terms of braking, both models feature double disk brakes with four pistons and radial, monoblock technology from Brembo. This indicates that both bikes should offer excellent stopping power and precise braking performance. However, the Monster SP 2023 is equipped with Brembo Stylema brakes, which are known for their exceptional performance and control. This upgrade may result in a more responsive and confidence-inspiring braking experience for the Monster SP 2023.
In terms of dimensions and weights, the Monster 1200 2014 has a slightly longer wheelbase of 1511 mm compared to the Monster SP 2023, which has a wheelbase of 1472 mm. A longer wheelbase can contribute to improved stability and straight-line performance, while a shorter wheelbase may enhance maneuverability and agility. Additionally, the Monster 1200 2014 has a lower seat height of 785 mm compared to the Monster SP 2023, which has a seat height of 810 mm. A lower seat height can make it easier for riders to reach the ground and provide a more comfortable riding position for shorter individuals.
In terms of weight, the Monster 1200 2014 has a higher dry weight of 182 kg compared to the Monster SP 2023, which has a dry weight of 166 kg. This weight difference may impact the bikes' handling and agility, with the Monster SP 2023 potentially feeling more nimble and maneuverable. However, it's important to note that the dry weight does not include additional accessories or fluids, so the actual weight of the bikes may be higher when fully equipped.

Another notable difference is the fuel tank capacity, with the Monster 1200 2014 having a larger capacity of 17.5 liters compared to the Monster SP 2023, which has a capacity of 14 liters. A larger fuel tank capacity can result in longer riding range and fewer fuel stops, which may be advantageous for riders planning long-distance trips or who prefer to ride for extended periods without refueling.
In terms of strengths, the Monster 1200 2014 offers various driving modes and ABS/DTC, which can enhance the bike's versatility and safety features. On the other hand, the Monster SP 2023 boasts a finely responsive Öhlins suspension, very well controllable and powerful Brembo Stylema brakes, a beautiful sound from the Termignoni exhaust, sporty ergonomics, and a good quickshifter. Ducati Monster 1200 2014
The fact that the new 1200 continues the typical monster look makes it one of the most beautiful naked bikes on the market today.
Ducati Monster SP 2023
The SP version is clearly the more expensive, but also clearly the better Ducati Monster. Everything fits together perfectly, because it is typically Ducati sporty. The fully adjustable Öhlins suspension (including the fork in Swedish gold!) fulfils its purpose perfectly, the Brembo Stylema braking system grips vehemently but not unpleasantly and the seating position, with its slightly more forward lean, is sporty but still comfortable. Even the engine fits very well into the concept of the very sporty mid-range naked bike - it wants to be revved and delivers the most power at the top end. If you are looking for a flaw in the Monster SP, it is most likely the jerking of the V2 at low revs, but true fans of the 90° V2 engine will not be offended by this at all. The price is not a problem either, as the Italians pay a pretty high price for the performance of the SP version.
