Overview - Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2022 vs Suzuki V-Strom 800DE 2023

When comparing the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2022 and the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE 2023, it is clear that both motorcycles have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Starting with the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2022, it boasts a powerful engine with 102 HP and 105 Nm of torque. This provides excellent performance both on and off-road. The bike also features advanced rider assistance systems such as ABS, riding modes, cornering ABS, ride by wire, cruise control, traction control, and anti-wheelie. These electronic aids enhance the overall riding experience and safety. The Africa Twin also comes with a steel frame, providing durability and stability. The suspension system consists of a Showa upside-down telescopic fork in the front and a monoshock in the rear, both of which are adjustable for compression, preload, and rebound. This allows for a customizable and comfortable ride. Other notable features include a 21-inch front tire, 18-inch rear tire, Bluetooth connectivity, LED headlights, and a TFT display.

However, the Africa Twin does have some weaknesses. The operating concept of the electronics is not very clear and intuitive, which may require some time to fully understand and utilize. The handguards are not very robust for off-road use, potentially limiting their effectiveness in protecting the rider's hands. The windshield offers manageable protection, but may not provide sufficient coverage in extreme weather conditions. Additionally, the ergonomics of the bike may not be ideal for standing riding, which could impact the rider's comfort and control.

On the other hand, the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE 2023 also has its own set of strengths. It features a powerful engine with 83 HP and 78 Nm of torque, providing ample power for various riding situations. The bike also comes with advanced rider assistance systems including ABS, riding modes, ride by wire, and traction control. One standout feature is the inclusion of a quickshifter up/down as standard, allowing for smooth and effortless gear changes. The V-Strom 800DE has a fully adjustable chassis, enabling riders to fine-tune the suspension to their preferences. The bike also boasts a dynamic design with cool color options, adding to its visual appeal.

However, the V-Strom 800DE does have some weaknesses. Riders with long legs may experience an acute knee angle, which could lead to discomfort on longer rides. The footrests may also drag early, potentially limiting the bike's off-road capabilities. Unlike the Africa Twin, the windshield on the V-Strom 800DE is only adjustable with tools, making it less convenient to adapt to changing riding conditions. Additionally, the V-Strom 800DE is heavier than many of its competitors, which could impact maneuverability and handling.

In conclusion, both the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2022 and the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE 2023 have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Africa Twin excels in terms of its powerful engine, sophisticated electronic driving aids, and long-distance capability. However, it may have some shortcomings in terms of its electronics operating concept, handguard durability, windshield protection, and ergonomics for standing riding. On the other hand, the V-Strom 800DE impresses with its powerful engine, fully adjustable chassis, clever electronic features, and dynamic design. However, it may have some drawbacks in terms of knee angle, footrest dragging, windshield adjustability, and weight. Ultimately, the choice between these two motorcycles will depend on the rider's priorities and preferences.

Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2022

Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2022

For me, the Africa Twin is a touring enduro as a touring enduro should be. This was already true of the predecessor model and did not change with the increase in displacement and power. Because the latter remained manageable at 102 hp, and Honda even managed to shed a few kilos compared to the CRF1000L. So it remained versatile, functioning just as well on the motorway as off-road. The chassis absorbs almost all bumps, the engine remains sovereign in every situation, ergonomics and seating comfort are exemplary. A motorbike for all days as well as for the big trip - wherever that may be.

Suzuki V-Strom 800DE 2023

It's amazing how much an unagitated, practical all-round motorbike like the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE can drive into your heart. Probably it is precisely because of this clever design with manageable electronic features that can be optimally adjusted to personal needs. Thanks to the excellent ride-by-wire system, the engine seems more powerful in the lower range than the displacement would suggest and does everything right both on and off-road. With 220 millimetres of suspension travel at the front and rear, the chassis is really well tuned for off-road, but clearly also offers an advantage for road riders on bad roads. The ergonomics are good, but tall riders should consider the higher, optional seat because of the somewhat acute knee angle.
