Design and Ergonomics of the BMW R 12 G/S

Since the '80s, "G/S" at BMW has stood for "Gelände / Straße" (Off-road / Street), highlighting a model's off-road capability. The R 12 G/S is designed to excel in both arenas. The new scrambler adopts the classic enduro design, blending it with modern elements. The compact cockpit fairing, long suspension travel, and cross-spoked wheels emphasize its off-road character. BMW stays true to the form language of the original G/S models, yet reinterprets it with contemporary technology. The bike captures the spirit of the R 80 G/S and brings it into the present.

For diverse riding needs, there are three seat options available. The R 12 G/S comes standard with a flat solo seat, designed to offer optimal freedom of movement, especially when riding off-road and standing. The seat height in standard configuration with a 17-inch rear wheel is 860 mm, while the Enduro Pro package with an 18-inch rear wheel raises it to 875 mm. An optional pillion package offers a two-up seat without altering the seat height. The rally seat raises the seating position by 20 mm, allowing for a more active riding posture. Handy steel loops on the rear frame serve as tie-down points for luggage.

Additional ergonomic adjustments are possible with the footrest system and the tapered aluminum handlebar. While the standard footrests are intended to withstand off-road conditions, the Enduro Pro package offers an optimized enduro footrest system with an enlarged platform and three serrated rows for better grip. Added comfort is provided by an optional 20 mm handlebar riser, allowing a more relaxed stance when standing.

Familiar Engine and Drive Components of the R 12 G/S

The heart of the R 12 G/S is the tried-and-true air/oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 1,170 cc. It delivers 80 kW (109 hp) at 7,000 rpm, with a peak torque of 115 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This power characteristic ensures robust thrust and a confident riding experience both on the road and off.

A distinctive feature of the R 12 G/S is its left-side mounted, single-flow exhaust system with a high-mounted muffler. This design provides better ground clearance in off-road situations and protects the exhaust system from damage. The conical end piece of the muffler gives the bike a striking appearance.

BMW R 12 G/S Chassis and Off-Road Capability

BMW is serious this time about focusing on off-road riding. The foundation of the R 12 G/S is a one-piece steel tubular bridge frame with a bolted-on rear frame. The steering head section is elevated and positioned further forward for optimal off-road ergonomics, increasing the steering angle and enhancing maneuverability in rough terrain.

For maximum off-road capability, the R 12 G/S comes standard with a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. The Enduro Pro package offers an optional 18-inch rear wheel for even better off-road performance. The suspension features a fully adjustable upside-down telescopic fork with a 45 mm stanchion tube diameter and 210 mm travel up front. At the rear, a Paralever swingarm with an angled, directly linked shock absorber with 200 mm travel provides wheel control. This setup aims to deliver high stability and a confident ride on unpaved surfaces.

For braking, the bike relies on the partially integral ABS Pro, which allows for braking in a lean. If you want to fully deactivate the rear-wheel ABS, you need to opt for the extra-cost Enduro Pro package. Axially mounted two-piston floating calipers, steel-braided brake lines, and 310 mm Brembo brake discs complete the hardware package.

Classic Exterior - Modern Interior: Assistance Systems and Ride Modes on the BMW R 12 G/S

The R 12 G/S comes standard with the familiar ride modes "Rain," "Road," and new to the R12 series, "Enduro." The Enduro Pro package adds an additional "Enduro Pro" mode, offering even more precise tuning for challenging terrain.

Additionally, the bike is equipped with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which functions based on lean angle. This can be fully deactivated for off-road use. The engine drag torque control (MSR) is also standard, preventing the rear wheel from locking up during abrupt throttle closures or downshifting.

BMW R 12 G/S Pricing, Color Options, and Special Features

The R 12 G/S is available in three color options: Night Black uni matte (base color), Light White uni (in the R 80 G/S colors with a red seat), and Option 719 Aragonit. The base price of the BMW R 12 G/S in Germany is 16,990 euros, while in Austria the base price is 19,590 euros. Pricing may vary depending on the selected features. An additional 300 euros are charged for an optional color. The exclusive Option 719 costs an extra 1,900 euros without the Enduro package, and 2,100 euros with it.

In addition to standard features, BMW offers numerous special equipment options. The Gear Shift Assist Pro allows for clutchless upshifting and downshifting, providing a more direct power transfer. The classic round instrument can be optionally replaced with a digital display. For improved night visibility, the adaptive cornering light "Headlight Pro" is available. The bike also features the keyless ride system.

Comparison to the BMW R nineT Urban G/S

BMW's R nineT lineup previously included a scrambler variant. While the R 12 G/S is designed as a full-fledged enduro with comprehensive off-road gear, the now-discontinued BMW R nineT Urban G/S leaned more towards classic scrambler designs, primarily intended for road use with occasional ventures onto gravel paths. The Urban G/S featured a flatter geometry, shorter suspension travel, and only a 19-inch front wheel. The goal was to combine a rugged appearance with road comfort. Tests on 1000PS showed that the Urban G/S scored points with its classic look and easy rideability, although it quickly reached its limits in challenging terrain. The new R 12 G/S targets riders seeking a true off-road machine without sacrificing classic aesthetics and the legendary boxer engine.
