Kawasaki Z900 RS / Z900 RS SE Test

We're putting what might be the ultimate classic bike, the Kawasaki Z900 RS and Z900 RS SE, to the test on a journey of over 2,500 km through Eastern Europe and the Balkans, all the way back to Vienna.

The Kawasaki Z900RS has earned a remarkable reputation in the neo-classic motorcycle segment, thanks to its blend of retro aesthetics and modern technology. To determine if this bike is more than just eye-catching looks, I decided to put it through a demanding test: over 2,500 km from Austria to Montenegro, traversing all kinds of roads, from fast highways to winding mountain passes, and varied pavement conditions.

In this article, I'll candidly reveal the highs and lows, as well as the areas where the Z900RS still has room for improvement.

Design and Build: Retro Authenticity with Modern Quality

One of the first things that grabs attention about the Kawasaki Z900RS is its design. The Japanese brand has masterfully captured the essence of 1970s motorcycles without compromising on modern standards of quality and finish.

The fuel tank is particularly striking. Kawasaki chose a well-crafted and authentic paint job, steering clear of cheap solutions like stickers. Additionally, details such as the twin analog dials, complemented by a small digital screen in the center, enhance that retro experience without sacrificing modern practicality.

However, this purity in design also means less electronics and fewer riding aids compared to some of its current rivals. The absence of features like a modern TFT display or advanced electronic aids might disappoint some, but for those seeking a pure and straightforward riding experience, this is more of a virtue than a flaw.

Overall, in terms of design and construction, the Z900RS scores high marks, displaying a harmonious blend of classic and modern with materials and finishes worthy of a premium motorcycle.

Kawasaki Z900RS Engine: An In-Line Four with Plenty of Character

The heart of the Kawasaki Z900RS is a 948 cc inline four-cylinder engine delivering 111 HP. But beyond the numbers, what really stands out is its character: smooth, powerful, and pleasantly refined.

The power delivery is progressive and predictable, with enough mid-range punch to avoid constant gear shifting. At the same time, revving through the gears to the high end is a symphony of power and refinement, an auditory delight that enriches every throttle twist without becoming annoying on long rides.

While the six-speed manual gearbox is precise and smooth (not a single missed shift or problem finding neutral over 2,500 km), an optional quickshifter would have complemented the bike's dynamic character well. However, for purists, this might be irrelevant or even a plus.

One area where the Z900RS could improve is its weight: at 216 kg, it isn't particularly light. Although this is barely noticeable in motion due to the excellent chassis balance, it can feel somewhat heavy in slow maneuvers or urban traffic.

In summary, the engine is undoubtedly one of this bike's strong points: refined, with enough power for any situation, and an appealing character that invites you to enjoy the ride without rushing.

Chassis and Suspension: Balance and Stability Without Extremes

The chassis of the Kawasaki Z900RS is a tubular steel Trellis, a design that effectively combines rigidity and flexibility. This structure directly contributes to the stability and precision the bike delivers in fast corners and winding roads.

The suspension on the standard Kawasaki Z900RS is fairly simple, lacking full adjustability. The inverted front fork (USD) doesn't allow for adjustments, and at the rear, the monoshock offers only basic preload adjustment.

On the other hand, the Z900RS SE version includes higher-quality, adjustable suspension, offering full adjustment for both the front fork and rear shock, along with premium components like the Öhlins rear shock.

This difference between versions means the standard Z900RS is more limited if you're looking to fine-tune the dynamic behavior to your personal preferences or more demanding riding. In contrast, the Z900RS SE is a better option if you particularly value being able to adapt the bike to different types of riding or routes.

On well-maintained roads, the Z900RS feels stable, noble, and predictable. It isn't an ultralight or extremely agile bike, but it does inspire great confidence for tackling fast curves or twisty routes safely.

When the asphalt deteriorates, the suspension shows its limitations. It absorbs moderate irregularities without problems, but on particularly broken or bumpy roads, it quickly becomes clear that it's not a trail bike nor does it aim to be. Still, overall, the comfort is acceptable even on long rides.

While it isn't a true Sport-Tourer, the relaxed ergonomics, along with a plush and comfortable seat, allow for long journeys without too much suffering.

Brakes: Good Performance, but Room for Improvement

In terms of braking, the Kawasaki Z900RS comes equipped with a system that delivers reliable stopping power but craves enhancement for a truly exhilarating ride.

Up front, it features dual 300 mm discs with radial calipers, while the rear has a single 250 mm disc. This setup provides enough power to safely stop the bike in any everyday situation and during relaxed rides. However, if you're looking for assertive stopping power, especially at high speeds or when riding aggressively on mountain roads, you may notice some weaknesses.

The main criticism is the feel of the lever. Although the radial calipers offer good power and progressiveness, the initial bite could be more direct and firm. Additionally, the ABS, which comes standard, tends to activate a bit earlier than desired during hard braking, reducing precision in more demanding situations.

This behavior becomes more evident due to the bike's weight (216 kg). In strong, late braking in corners, you'll clearly notice the inertia. While it's not severe or dangerous, those accustomed to lighter, sportier bikes might miss a bit more bite in the brakes.

A simple and effective improvement would be to install steel braided lines and higher-performance brake pads, which would significantly enhance the feel and effectiveness during intense braking. All of this is included in the SE version of the Z900 RS.

Riding Experience: Classic Pleasure with Modern Performance

The Kawasaki Z900RS may not stand out as the fastest, lightest, or most technologically advanced, but it truly shines in offering an authentic and sensory-rich experience that many modern bikes have overlooked.

You sit more "on top" of the bike rather than "tucked in" like on the standard Z900. The riding position is well-conceived, featuring a high, wide handlebar, comfortably positioned footpegs, and a spacious, well-padded seat. Thanks to this ergonomic setup, you can enjoy long rides without significant discomfort. It's a bike designed to savor every kilometer, not necessarily to devour them in record time.

In urban settings, its performance is decent, although, as mentioned, its weight can be a drawback in heavy traffic. Nevertheless, the smoothness of the engine at low revs and a reasonably tight turning radius help ensure that urban riding isn't excessively uncomfortable.

On open roads and fast curves is where the Z900RS really shows its best side: the chassis stability, the progressive engine, and its evocative sound create a unique experience. The bike feels predictable and secure, inviting you to enjoy the journey at a relaxed pace. Adding to this is its mechanical throttle, not ride-by-wire, providing extraordinary feedback about what's happening with the bike. It's something hard to put into words.

On the highway, understandably, the lack of aerodynamic protection limits comfort at high speeds over extended periods. To address this "problem," you can always install a small windscreen cheaply, which reduces wind pressure on the rider, especially on long routes.

In conclusion, riding the Z900RS is a pleasure, a classic experience framed in modern performance, designed for those who value enjoyment over pure numbers.

Conclusion

After covering over 2,500 kilometers, here are the key takeaways on the Kawasaki Z900RS:

The Good:

  • Design and Finish: Excellent quality, attention to detail, and a perfectly executed retro aesthetic.
  • Engine: Smooth, powerful, and with an addictive sound. Provides enough thrust for any situation.
  • Comfort: Comfortable and ergonomic riding position for long trips or daily use.
  • Chassis: Stable, balanced, and predictable, instilling confidence on all types of roads.

The Bad:

  • High Weight: At 216 kg, it feels heavy in slow maneuvers or city riding.
  • Brakes Could Be Better: Good overall performance, but they lack a bit more bite and a firmer feel in sporty riding.
  • Limited Technology: Though simplicity is part of its charm, some riders will miss more advanced electronic aids.

Is it worth it? Definitely, yes. The Kawasaki Z900RS isn't perfect and doesn't claim to be, but it offers something few bikes do today: authentic personality, unique character, and pure sensations. If you're looking for a bike that excites you every time you ride it, with impeccable retro styling and balanced performance, the Z900RS is hard to beat.

Moreover, thanks to its timeless design, it will remain appealing for many years. A bike to enjoy the road leisurely and with plenty of style.
