At EICMA 2024, we were already able to take a closer look at some BMW motorcycle innovations for 2025 in person. Colleague Martin even had the opportunity to extensively test the new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure. However, it seems the Bavarians are not yet done with their model updates for the upcoming season. Here are all the details on the new BMW F 900 R and F 900 XR.

More Electronics for BMW F 900 R & F 900 XR 2025

Both motorcycles continue to be powered by the well-known, now Euro 5+ compliant 895 cc twin-cylinder inline engine, which still delivers 105 hp and offers a strong torque curve in the mid-range. An optional new sport silencer from Akrapovic is also available, which is designed to beautifully accentuate the characteristic sound shaped by the 270/450 degree crankpin offset.

The riding modes of the new F 900 R and F 900 XR have been expanded and optimized. In addition to the familiar "Rain" and "Road" modes, the "Dynamic" mode is now also standard. This has been newly tuned for the 2025 model year and is characterized by a more direct throttle response, which is intended to enable more agile responsiveness.

As with many new motorcycle models, the electronics on the F 900 R and F 900 XR will also be significantly expanded in 2025.

Also new in the standard equipment is the dynamic traction control (DTC). It uses data from the ABS sensors as well as lean angle detection to prevent the rear wheel from spinning. The DTC can adjust the drive torque within milliseconds by retarding the ignition angle, regulating the injection, or adjusting the throttle position. The system is designed to provide an additional safety reserve for changing road conditions and different requirements. If necessary, for example on the race track, the DTC can be deactivated.

Also new to the standard equipment is the engine drag torque control (MSR). This technology prevents the rear wheel from slipping when the throttle is abruptly closed or during rapid downshifting. In combination with the anti-hopping clutch, which is still installed, the MSR is intended to contribute to a more stable and safer riding performance.

New, Adjustable Suspension for BMW F 900 R & F 900 XR 2025

A key innovation is the new upside-down fork with a 43 mm diameter. It is adjustable in rebound, compression, and preload, allowing it to be configured for various applications. The suspension travel is 135 mm for the F 900 R and 170 mm for the F 900 XR.

The new 17-inch aluminum cast wheels also contribute to the increased dynamics. They are approximately 1.8 kg lighter than the wheels of previous models, which is expected to noticeably improve both handling and acceleration and braking performance. Tires in sizes 120/70 ZR 17 (front) and 180/55 ZR 17 (rear) are mounted as standard.

BMW F 900 R & F 900 XR - ABS Pro and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) standard

The F 900 R and F 900 XR adopt even more electronics from higher-priced BMW models, such as the now standard BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, BMW's cornering ABS. It reduces abrupt steering force changes during panic braking, thereby minimizing the risk of the vehicle suddenly righting itself. Depending on the riding mode, the regulation adapts to the road conditions: In "Rain" and "Road," the focus is on early intervention for maximum stability, while in the sportier "Dynamic" mode, a later regulation and reduced rear wheel lift detection ensure optimized deceleration.

The system is complemented by the standard Dynamic Brake Control (DBC). This provides additional stability during heavy braking maneuvers by preventing unintentional throttle inputs. As soon as the sensors detect a strong deceleration, any simultaneous acceleration signal is recognized as implausible, and the throttle valves remain closed. This shortens the braking distance and increases vehicle stability.

Lavish Features of BMW F 900 R & F 900 XR 2025

Both models are equipped with a new battery that is 0.8 kg lighter, contributing to the overall weight reduction. Additionally, the rear section has been redesigned, with integrated function indicators enhancing both design and functionality. The compact license plate holder combines brake light, tail light, and indicators into a single unit.

The BMW F 900 XR comes standard with Headlight Pro, which includes daytime running lights and adaptive cornering lights. The adaptive cornering lights operate via additional LED modules that activate based on lean angles exceeding 10 degrees and speeds over 10 km/h. Additionally, the F 900 XR features other comfort elements such as a USB-C charging port located on the right side of the cockpit, offering a maximum charging current of 2.4 A. Heated grips are also part of the standard equipment, making the F 900 XR particularly appealing to touring riders.

Custom Ergonomics for BMW F 900 R & F 900 XR 2025

The F 900 R received an updated seating position through adjustments to the so-called ergonomic triangle consisting of handlebars, seat, and foot pegs. The handlebars were moved further forward, while the foot pegs were positioned further back. This allows for a sportier, more front-wheel-oriented seating posture, which is particularly suitable for dynamic riding styles. The foot levers were also newly adjusted to further enhance ergonomics.

BMW F 900 R 2025

Not only does the BMW F 900 R 2025 receive a new design, but the ergonomics have also become more aggressive.

The F 900 XR, on the other hand, has been aerodynamically optimized, particularly in the area of the front fairing. A newly designed wind deflector reduces wind pressure on the rider, thereby decreasing helmet buffeting, which is intended to enhance long-distance comfort. The F 900 XR also comes standard with handguards, providing additional wind and weather protection. For even more comfort, the model can optionally be equipped with a windscreen that is 30 mm higher from the factory.

BMW F 900 R & F 900 XR 2025 Colors and Accessories

The new BMW F 900 R is offered in three color schemes. As a base variant in the body color Snapper Rocks Blue metallic, in the dark Triple Black variant, or in the Sport design in the colors Lightwhite uni / Racingblue metallic. The BMW F 900 XR is painted in the base variant in Racingred uni with black and gray elements, is also offered in a Triple Black version, and in the Sport variant, it features the color scheme Lightwhite uni / Racingblue metallic.

The range of special equipment and original BMW Motorrad accessories has been expanded for the new model year. Now, both models are available with a sport silencer in collaboration with Akrapovič, milled footpegs and levers, as well as axle protectors and lockable soft bags. Additionally, the BMW F 900 R can be tailored to individual ergonomic needs with the 25 mm higher Sport seat. For the BMW F 900 XR, a 25 mm higher seat option has also been added to the original BMW Motorrad accessories program. Enhanced long-distance comfort is also offered by the new, 30 mm higher high windshield as a factory option.
