New Yamaha R1 Race and R1 GYTR 2025

In February 2024, we received the sad news: Yamaha is discontinuing the R1 and R1M. Although this fate had been simmering in the rumor mill for some time, it still came as a devastating blow to fans. However, just as Yamaha did with the R6, the R1 makes its comeback—as a pure track motorcycle.

Since its debut in 1998, the Yamaha R1 stands as an unmistakable icon in the supersport segment. It has not only clinched numerous racing victories but also consistently set new technological benchmarks. Notably, with the introduction of the crossplane engine in 2009 and electronic updates in 2015, Yamaha brought MotoGP technologies to a production motorcycle that excites both on and off the track. The Yamaha R1 Race is completely dedicated to track performance. It emphasizes aerodynamics, performance, and electronics adapted from professional racing. The new R1 sheds street-legal components, making it exclusively optimized for the track. The key features are as follows:

Aerodynamic MotoGP Winglets

Inspired by MotoGP, these winglets enhance the motorcycle's stability at high speeds and aid the R1's anti-wheelie system. They contribute to the bike's balance, particularly during braking and cornering.

Enhanced KYB Front Fork

The revised 43-mm upside-down KYB front fork is specifically designed for track use. It offers customizable damping for optimized feedback and control across various riding conditions. This new fork technology not only enhances ride quality but also boosts stability and precision in handling the R1 Race.

Brembo Braking System for Maximum Stopping Power

Featuring a new front brake setup with a Brembo master cylinder and Stylema monoblock calipers, the R1 Race delivers even harder braking. This system allows the rider precise, finely-tuned brake modulation.

Powerful CP4 Engine

The 998cc crossplane inline-four engine punches out a solid 200 horsepower.

Advanced Electronics Package

A highlight of the R1 Race is its comprehensive electronic assistance system. It includes a 6-axis IMU that detects the motorcycle's movements in all directions and manages the interplay of various assistance systems like Traction Control (TCS), Slide Control (SCS), Lift Control (LIF), Launch Control (LCS), and Brake Control (BC).

New Seat Cover for Enhanced Control

The seat of the R1 Race has also been optimized to provide the rider with more grip without restricting freedom of movement. This enhances the feel for the bike, especially in corners, and contributes to the motorcycle's stability.

Alongside the R1 Race, Yamaha is also launching the new R1 GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing). This model takes it a step further, offering specially developed racing components that enhance both performance and handling. The R1 GYTR features:

Race-Proven GYTR Parts

The R1 GYTR is equipped with a range of high-quality components developed by Yamaha's racing engineers. These include a lighter and aerodynamically optimized racing fairing made of carbon-reinforced fiberglass, GYTR footpegs, and a GYTR handlebar set.

Enhanced Braking Performance

The combination of Brembo Stylema calipers and Z04 racing brake pads delivers further improved stopping power. Additionally, the model is equipped with special GYTR brake lines for even more precise brake modulation.

GYTR Racing ECU and Electronics

A highlight of the R1 GYTR is the special GYTR ECU, which, in conjunction with a racing wiring harness, allows for precise control and fine-tuning of the engine electronics. This enables riders to perfectly tailor the machine's performance to their needs and the specific track layout.

Akrapovič Racing Exhaust

The Akrapovič racing exhaust not only boosts performance but also reduces weight. The exhaust complies with strict noise regulations for racing use.

Additional GYTR Components

Other highlights include the GYTR ABS emulator, a GYTR on/off switch, the racing fuel cap, and optimized sprocket gearing, which further enhance efficiency and performance.

The new R1 Race and its even more performance-tuned sibling, the R1 GYTR, will be available from November 2024. Prices are yet to be announced.
