It was only a matter of time before BMW brought the new adventure version of the R 1300 GS presented at the end of 2023 to the market. Now the time has come, and what might sound like "just mount a big tank and done" is actually a heavily modified version of the Bavarian adventure bike.

Famous boxer engine with 145 hp

Let's start with something familiar. The heart of the R 1300 GS Adventure is the twin-cylinder boxer engine. With a displacement of 1,300 cc, an output of 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm, and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, it remains the most powerful boxer engine BMW has ever produced. Thanks to its more compact design, made possible by the gearbox located under the engine and the new arrangement of the camshaft drive, this engine offers impressive performance.

Just like in the standard version, BMW offers four riding modes as standard: Rain, Road, Eco, and Enduro. These provide quite a range, with the Eco mode maximizing the range with a full tank, while the Enduro mode is designed to enhance the off-road riding experience.

BMW's Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) now available for the Adventure

The latest development from Bavaria, the ASA system presented in May, will be optionally available in the R 1300 GS Adventure. The new Automated Shift Assistant allows for fully automated shifting and clutch operation, aiming to make the riding experience more comfortable and dynamic. This technology will also be available as an optional feature for the standard R 1300 GS starting from the 2025 model year.

New Rear Frame of the R 1300 GS Adventure

The chassis construction of the R 1300 GS Adventure features a steel sheet main frame, which optimizes space and provides higher stiffness values. The aluminum lattice rear frame replaces the aluminum die-cast rear frame used in the R 1300 GS. Notably, this provides a larger area for the pillion, as well as additional luggage storage options - more on that later. The front wheel guidance with EVO-Telelever and flex element, along with the revised rear wheel guidance with EVO-Paralever, further contribute to steering precision and riding stability.

BMW R 1300 GS Adventure with Dynamic Suspension Adjustment and optional Vehicle Height Control

The electronic suspension Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) - which is also used in the R 1300 GS - dynamically adjusts the damping and spring rate. This adjustment is made according to the selected riding mode, riding condition, and maneuvers. An automated adjustment of the spring base ensures load compensation, thereby optimizing the riding experience on various terrains.

The adaptive vehicle height control, available as an optional factory feature, allows for automatic adjustment of the vehicle height depending on the operating condition, providing maximum comfort without compromising riding dynamics and maximum lean angle. When stationary and at low speeds, the vehicle height is lowered by 30 mm each. The optional feature "Adaptive Vehicle Height Control Comfort" offers an additional vehicle lowering by another 20 mm for shorter riders and easier handling.

The additional headlights integrated into the bodywork come as standard.

Riding Assistant with rear collision warning

The new R 1300 GS Adventure comes standard with Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) with braking function. The Riding Assistant, available as a factory option, offers many more features. It includes Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Change Warning (SWW), and the new Rear End Collision Warning (RECW). The new Rear End Collision Warning (RECW) alerts following traffic of an impending rear-end collision by flashing the hazard lights at an increased frequency. The Rear End Collision Warning (RECW) will also be available for the BMW R 1300 GS introduced last year, starting from the 2025 model year.

BMW R 1300 GS Adventure with 30-liter fuel tank

With the new R 1300 GS Adventure, a new design comes along that sets it apart from its sister, the R 1300 GS. A key component is the largely unfaired, 30-liter fuel tank made of aluminum sheet. With a WMTC consumption of 4.9 l/100km (5.0 l/100km with ASA) specified by BMW, this means a range of approximately 600 kilometers for the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure.

It was important to the developers at BMW Motorrad that the fuel tank, with its large exterior surface, also fulfills its additional task of carrying luggage. Therefore, three fastening elements are screwed onto the upper tank fairing. This solution provides individual attachment loops for luggage on one hand and simultaneously serves as a hinge mount with snap lock for the optionally available 12-liter tank bag with a waterproof inner bag and outer pockets.

The tank bag can be easily folded away at the gas station.

The width of the fuel tank also provides protection against weather influences coming from the front. Wind and weather protection is also offered by the larger windshield in combination with the two transparent wind deflectors. The rubberized tank pads on the upper tank fairings, both right and left, are also part of the standard equipment. During stops, they offer a non-slip storage option for utensils.

Coffee mugs and other items find space on the storage surfaces.

Aluminum cases with integrated magnetic couplings as an electrical interface

As special accessories, the new R 1300 GS Adventure offers a 37-liter aluminum top case and, as a factory option, a top case holder with a vibration-damped top case plate, an electrical interface for lighting and a USB charging socket, as well as integrated pillion handles. The payload is up to 8 kg.

High operating comfort and secure luggage transport are also ensured by the new aluminum cases, each with a payload of up to 10 kg. The total capacity is 73.5 liters (37 l left, 36.5 l right). They are attached to the case holders made of forged aluminum. The magnetic coupling integrated into the left case holder serves as an electrical interface for the USB charging socket in the left case. For even greater storage volume, the optional volume extensions of 10 liters per case are also available.
