'Nakedbike Test 2024'

The MT-09 is not an ordinary naked bike. It embodies the "Dark Side of Japan," a phrase that perfectly captures the untamed energy and rebellious nature of this machine. Its triple engine is like a volcano slumbering in the depths of Japan – powerful, unpredictable, and always ready to erupt. With 119 HP and 93 Nm of torque, it offers a thrust that propels you forward in any situation. The triple engine of the Yamaha MT-09 is a true masterpiece of engineering. It offers an impressive blend of revviness and grunt. Our test riders were thrilled by the smooth yet powerful power delivery of the engine. Kurt Rubik, a long-time four-cylinder rider, praised the triple as the perfect compromise between torque and RPM. Martin highlighted the strong pull from low down, while Adam Child described the engine as "beautiful." In practice, the engine of the MT-09 proves to be extremely versatile, whether you're cruising relaxed on the country road or attacking the twisties in a sporty manner.

The helmets in the 1000PS naked bike test

For a cool head during this test, the HJC RPHA 71 Carbon was the helmet of choice. The 1000PS crew was impressed by its pleasantly neutral aerodynamics, which also ensure fatigue-free riding on longer stretches. Additionally, the effective ventilation performance and reliable heat dissipation on hot days are noteworthy. The carbon model not only looks super classy, but it is also noticeably lighter than the base version of the RPHA 71. The visor mechanism with an additional sun visor works flawlessly. The fit is comfortable, and the fitment covers a wide range within the 1000PS editorial team - all our editors felt comfortable! We give our recommendation.

Our Test Routes - Region Bucklige Welt

Riding a motorcycle in the Bucklige Welt offers an exceptionally charming experience, highlighted by the picturesque landscape of this region in Lower Austria. Characterized by gentle hills, expansive meadows, and idyllic small villages, the Bucklige Welt provides the perfect terrain for motorcycle enthusiasts who seek both the beauty of nature and the thrill of carving up some twisties. The varied routes lead through forested areas and past historical landmarks, making each tour a journey through the culture and history of the country. Particularly appealing is riding in the spring and autumn months when the landscape is bathed in a spectacular play of colors that invigorates the senses and leaves unforgettable impressions. This makes the Bucklige Welt a hidden gem for bikers who seek the authentic and original.

1000PS Naked Bike Test 2024 - The Points Rating

During the test, we rode a total of 10 motorcycles in a direct comparison. The motorcycles were in different displacement classes. Nevertheless, we evaluated the motorcycles using the same rating scheme. The categories in the test protocol include aspects such as engine comfort and modulation, engine revviness, pull-through, engine power, transmission, quickshifter, clutch, traction control regulation, traction control adjustment options, switch quality, and control logic. Additionally, aspects such as stability, handling, precision, suspension quality and adjustment range, brakes, modulation, and effectiveness were evaluated. Each test rider provided their individual rating, which was then averaged for each category and finally resulted in an overall rating. The best motorcycle in each category was rated "1," and the worst motorcycle in the category was rated "10." For our readers, these tables are interesting for two reasons. On the one hand, they can see in which areas individual motorcycles are above average and in which areas they are below average - always considering that the price and displacement classes are very different. On the other hand, you can click through all the reports and results here and directly compare your favorites - regardless of price and displacement class.

Transmission and Clutch of the Yamaha MT-09

A precise and easy-to-shift transmission is essential for riding pleasure, and the Yamaha MT-09 does not disappoint in this regard. The quickshifter with blipper function allows for seamless gear changes, which is particularly advantageous during sporty riding. Martin reported that the blipper works flawlessly and the gear shifts are smooth. The clutch is also well-dosed, contributing to increased operating comfort. Overall, the shifting precision of the MT-09 ensures that the rider can fully concentrate on the road.

Electronic Assistance Systems of the Yamaha MT-09

The Yamaha MT-09 is equipped with a variety of electronic assistance systems that ensure safety and confidence while riding. These include lean-sensitive traction control and cornering ABS. Kurt Rubik and Martin appreciated the stability and improved front-end feel, which is supported by modern electronics. Adam Child, however, noted that the brakes are not as strong as those on the Street Triple RS. The controls, while functional, could be more intuitive according to some riders, like Schaaf, who prefers the solutions from KTM or Triumph.

Ergonomics and Operation of the Yamaha MT-09

The seating position of the Yamaha MT-09 has undergone several changes in recent years. While the earlier, very upright seating position was considered unusual, the current model offers a balanced posture. Schaaf praised the more comfortable, slightly sportier seating position, although it is still very touring-oriented and relaxed. Kurt Rubik found the seating position extremely comfortable, even on longer rides. Nils Müller, however, mentioned that the connection to the saddle in the crotch area and at the legs is not optimal. The controls are sporty and robust, but there are differing opinions on the user-friendliness of the dashboard.

Chassis and Handling of the Yamaha MT-09

The chassis of the Yamaha MT-09 impresses with its stability and precision. Kurt Rubik highlighted the agility and crisp riding behavior, while Martin praised the stability and good feedback of the chassis. Zonko noted that the MT-09 offers a better front-end feel compared to earlier models, which increases confidence in cornering. Adam Child found the chassis adequate for street use but saw potential for improvements on track days, especially compared to the Triumph Street Triple RS. The adjustability of the chassis is good but could be further optimized for sportier riders. The chassis of the MT-09 is reminiscent of the perfect balance of a Zen garden, only this garden can be traversed at breathtaking speed. The agile handling and precise steering make every corner a meditation in motion, a dance between man and machine. This machine, born from the darkness, clings to the road like a koi fish to a calm river.

Brakes of the Yamaha MT-09

The brakes of the Yamaha MT-09 are good but could be stronger compared to some competitors. Adam Child noted that the brakes are not as strong as those on the Triumph Street Triple RS, which is particularly noticeable in extreme riding situations. Nevertheless, the brakes offer sufficient deceleration and safety for normal road use. The combination of cornering ABS and well-dosed brakes ensures a safe riding experience.

Miscellaneous on the Yamaha MT-09

Some test riders commented on the appearance and build quality of the Yamaha MT-09. Zonko found the front design coherent, while Schaaf praised the visual improvements over the previous model. Nils Müller noted that the overall build quality is high and the motorcycle conveys a sense of quality. The tires were also positively rated as they suit the character of the motorcycle well. The design of the MT-09 is a homage to the Japanese art of minimalism, but with a sharp edge. The front, often described as polarizing, is like an Oni mask – intimidating and fascinating at the same time. It draws attention, remains memorable, and leaves no one indifferent. It is as if the essence of Japanese street culture has been cast in metal.

Conclusion on the Yamaha MT-09

The Yamaha MT-09 is a mature and versatile naked bike that is suitable for both sporty riders and touring enthusiasts. The three-cylinder engine impresses with its blend of revviness and grunt, while the chassis offers stability and agility. Despite minor weaknesses in the brakes and ergonomics in the crotch area, the MT-09 presents itself as an accessible and well-crafted motorcycle. Particularly commendable are the improved seating position and the enhanced electronic assistance systems. Overall, the Yamaha MT-09 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a dynamic and fun naked bike.

Kurt Rubik on the Yamaha MT-09

Kurt Rubik, an experienced stunt rider, is particularly impressed with the Yamaha MT-09, especially the seating position and the wide handlebars, which suit him as a stunt rider. Right from the first corner, he noticed how agile the bike wants to lean into the turn. He describes the feeling that the front wheel wants to dive even more into the corner, even at slow speeds. The combination of a low seating position, wide handlebars, and a short wheelbase makes the bike extremely eager to carve up some twisties. Kurt finds these characteristics consistently positive and denies that the bike feels too nervous. He even emphasizes that it feels as if you could let go of the handlebars and the bike would still hold the radius.

Regarding the engine, Kurt praises the triple, which appeals to him as a fan of four-cylinders. He describes the triple as the ideal compromise between torque and revs, highlighting its consistent performance in any situation. Aesthetically, Kurt finds the front view of the Yamaha MT-09 appealing, even though it might not be to everyone's taste. He describes the design as polarizing, but just to his liking.

Martin Bauer on the Yamaha MT-09

Martin, who has already gained experience with previous models of the Yamaha MT-09 in his specialized workshop, talks about the evolution of the current model. He notes a significant maturity and improvement compared to older versions. He particularly highlights the seating position, which he finds very comfortable even after longer rides, without losing the sporty feel. Martin praises the chassis for its stability and good feedback, while still remaining nimble.

The triple engine is praised for its consistently strong grunt, which is particularly well-suited to a naked bike, as high revs are not constantly required. The functionality of the blipper and the gear shifts are also impeccable, making the overall concept of the bike very appealing. Martin considers the bike to be of high quality, but emphasizes that there is still potential for adjustments based on individual rider preferences, especially in the chassis for a sportier setup. Overall, Martin is very satisfied with the current Yamaha MT-09.

Yamaha MT-09 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

nastynils

Absolutely, Yamaha has put together a truly awesome bike. They have successfully addressed all the criticisms of the predecessor without neutering the wild and playful nature of the MT-09. The fourth generation is more mature, precise, and refined, riding more neutrally and stably without losing its nimbleness. A splendid motorcycle that, thanks to many detailed improvements, currently offers an almost unbeatable price-performance ratio and has even become quite attractive. Yamaha dealers will be overwhelmed with orders after test rides. Let's hope availability is sufficient because the new MT-09 is the very definition of a "bullseye"!
