Ducati Panigale V2 S vs. Yamaha R9 - The Engine
Both bikes aim for the same goal: sporty performance combined with everyday usability. Ducati sticks with the proven V2 engine, while Yamaha relies on the popular triple from the MT-09. The triple impresses with its strong, smooth torque, especially under 6,000 RPM, making it feel more robust in the lower range. Ducati counters with a variable valve timing that generates a bit more power in the lower range, although the Panigale has a slightly delayed throttle response. Above 6,000 RPM, the engine characteristics align again, but both suffer from the Euro-5-Plus homologation, causing a slight drop-off at higher revs. The most notable difference is in engine braking: the Ducati V2 offers significantly less braking effect, while Yamaha's triple provides a more direct, smoothly adjustable throttle response.
Key Facts
Ducati Panigale V2 S vs. Yamaha R9 - The Chassis
This is where the biggest technical difference between the rivals emerges. Ducati uses a lightweight monocoque chassis (around 4 kg), while Yamaha opts for a traditional frame that is significantly heavier at just under 10 kg. This weight difference noticeably impacts handling. Ducati also relies on high-quality Öhlins components that offer more reserves at the limit, especially on the racetrack. Yamaha's Kayaba components perform solidly but have fewer reserves in extreme situations. An upgrade would be advisable here, especially if track use is more frequent.
Ducati Panigale V2 S vs. Yamaha R9 - Handling
On the track, the Ducati's narrow design is a clear advantage: it steers more easily and precisely, especially at higher speeds. Riders who favor a V-shaped line will find the Panigale more accommodating. In direct comparison, the Yamaha feels a bit broader and less agile, which is due to the larger crankshaft of the triple engine. However, at lower speeds, the difference is barely noticeable—here, the R9 also impresses with good handling and high agility.

Ducati Panigale V2 S vs. Yamaha R9 - The Brakes
Both models exhibit a high level of braking performance. Both Yamaha and Ducati utilize top-notch components that perform confidently on the track. Particularly practical is the option to disable the rear-wheel ABS function, allowing ambitious riders to achieve shorter braking distances on the racetrack. In this aspect, the two bikes are hardly distinguishable from each other.
Ducati Panigale V2 S vs. Yamaha R9 - Comfort
Both manufacturers have found a good balance in seating position. The bikes offer a sporty yet relatively comfortable seating posture. A minor drawback becomes evident on the track: occasionally, the elbow can bump into the knee, which can hinder a dynamic riding stance. This issue is less significant in everyday use. Additionally, Yamaha scores better on wind protection compared to Ducati, which, due to its compact build, results in more wind pressure.
Ducati Panigale V2 S vs. Yamaha R9 - Conclusion
The Ducati Panigale V2 S and Yamaha R9 are two highly appealing motorcycles with different focal points. The Yamaha impresses with its torque-rich triple engine, excellent electronics including integrated navigation, and a superior quickshifter. On the other hand, the Panigale shines with outstanding handling, lower weight, and a top-notch chassis. Those who primarily ride on the track will likely prefer the Ducati. However, for street riders who value comfort and everyday usability, the Yamaha might be the better choice. Both machines offer great riding pleasure—just with different emphasis on their strengths.

Yamaha R9 2025 - Experiences and Expert Review

Even though the R9 hasn't turned into an uncompromising R6, it displays solid sporty character and performs well on the track, delivering plenty of fun. Beginners might actually find it easier to handle on the track compared to an R6. On the flip side, with its torquey engine and more relaxed seating position, the R9 is far more suitable for everyday use, though it doesn't quite match the ride comfort of an MT09. Yamaha has already demonstrated its track capabilities with a debut win in the Supersport World Championship. With A2 compatibility and an attractive entry price, Yamaha offers a new gateway to a practical supersport machine that will surely interest beginners.

Ducati Panigale V2 S 2025 - Experiences and Expert Review

Ducati has fully achieved its goal of creating an easy-to-ride supersport bike. With extremely light handling, low weight, and a controllable engine, the new V2 Panigale excels on technically demanding tracks. The major highlights include late braking points and tight cornering radii that can be maintained at high speeds. The slightly lower power is almost compensated by its weight advantage. Thus, the new Panigale V2 S offers a significant improvement for beginners compared to its predecessor, and contrary to the old adage "power is everything," it may actually help the inexperienced achieve better lap times due to its lightness. Even power-hungry superbike riders will find the little Panigale brings a smile to their faces. Particularly for road use, Ducati has scored many points. With the new Panigale, the Italians have introduced a toned-down version with a much more comfortable seating position, clearly aimed at road usability and beginner-friendliness. This is further highlighted by the availability of an A2 version. Combined with reduced prices, the V2 Panigale also becomes an option for budget-conscious riders. Who would have thought, a Panigale for beginners?
