The KTM 125 SMC R and KTM 390 SMC R expand the Supermoto lineup from Mattighofen downwards from 2025, targeting a broader range of riders. KTM aims to design both models to offer a sporty riding experience while being easy to handle. True to Supermoto style, long suspension travel is combined with smaller 17-inch wheels. The frames (in modified form) and engines are borrowed from the Duke sisters, with the SMC R derivatives being significantly lighter than their naked counterparts. The KTM 125 SMC R weighs in at 145 kg and the 390 SMC R at 154 kg "ready to race". With a full tank, the Supermotos weigh 152 kg and 161 kg, respectively. The 390 SMC R is thus very close to the power-to-weight ratio legally allowed for the A2 class (0.2kw/kg).

The supermotos we've been waiting for so long!
The 690 platform has been spoiling us with brutal single power for nearly two decades. However, for many (young) enthusiasts, the supermotos were unattainable. This changes in 2025 with the KTM 125 SMC R and the KTM 390 SMC R.

Finally, supermotos for the A1 and A2 class! Model overview
KTM Supermoto Design - typically minimalist, typically SMC R
The sleek and compact chassis of both models is designed to make the bikes ergonomically accessible to a wide range of riders. The 9-liter metal tank is now positioned in front of the rider, rather than under the seat as with the larger sibling. It is space-efficiently integrated and well-protected in case of a fall. Notably, the exhaust has been relocated to a position under the engine, optimizing the center of gravity. The underfloor system eliminates the need for a high-mounted end pipe, giving the rear a sleek and minimalist appearance.
The narrow fairing elements are intended to provide the rider with optimal freedom of movement, whether standing on the pegs or leaning into a corner. Visually, the bikes echo the style of the 690 SMC R but adopt a design more inspired by the off-road sector. Orange serves as the dominant base color, accented with white and black, along with graphics that revive the 90s KTM look with a touch of violet. The most striking change at the front is the new LED element, which integrates well into the aggressive mask.
Frame and chassis of the 125 and 390 SMC R 2025
The new two-piece steel trellis frame, derived from the third generation of the Duke platform, has been specifically optimized for the demands of Supermoto vehicles. Adjustments to the steering head angle and stiffness profiles are intended to ensure agile handling while maintaining the stability of the Supermotos. Additionally, the frame has been revised to accommodate the cooling system, enhancing thermal efficiency.
Not a given in this class: The SMC Rs feature bolted steel subframes, providing a stable foundation for the single seat and contributing to robustness in case of an incident. The newly developed aluminum swingarm completes the package and, according to KTM, is designed for stability and durability. Besides the Supermotos, we will also find it in the upcoming Adventure series.
Massive suspension travel on the KTM 125 and 390 SMC R 2025
The suspension of both models is based on WP APEX technology. Up front, a 43 mm open-cartridge fork with 230 mm of travel is used. While the KTM 390 SMC R features tool-free adjustable rebound and compression damping, the fork of the KTM 125 SMC R is non-adjustable. At the rear, a WP APEX shock absorber also provides 230 mm of travel. On the KTM 390 SMC R, the rebound and preload can be individually adjusted, whereas on the KTM 125 SMC R, only the preload is adjustable. The long suspension travel is certainly sufficient for the occasional track outing, but it should mainly provide plenty of comfort in everyday use. The seat height remains accessible at 860 mm, especially since the KTM is built very narrow.

Both models are equipped with 17-inch wheels and use tires in the dimensions 110/70 R17 at the front and 150/60 R17 at the rear, offering a wide selection in the market. The KTM 390 SMC R, like its big sister, traditionally relies on spoked wheels fitted with Michelin Power 6 tires, while the KTM 125 SMC R uses cast wheels and opts for the Indian MRF REVZ-C1.
Anyone familiar with KTM Supermotos knows: a single disc is sufficient for decent deceleration values given the low vehicle weight. Thus, the 125 and 390 SMC R models also feature a 320-mm single disc with a radially mounted caliper at the front, while a 240-mm single-piston brake is mounted at the rear. This combination should ensure precise deceleration both on the road and on the racetrack. The well-known, cool KTM feature Supermoto ABS is, of course, not missing in the SMC Rs. Both models are equipped with an ABS system that can be switched between Road, Supermoto, and Supermoto+ modes as needed.
KTM 125 and 390 SMC R 2025: Engine and transmission are sourced from the Duke
The KTM 125 SMC R and KTM 390 SMC R are equipped with the latest generation of the LC4c single-cylinder engine, first introduced in the current Duke series. The engine has been extensively revised to meet the Euro-5+ standard. Optimized cylinder heads, finer injectors, and improved gear shifting ensure more efficient performance and smoother handling.
Specifically, this means that the power limits of the respective classes are well utilized. The KTM 125 SMC R features a single-cylinder engine with 125 cc, delivering a maximum of 15 hp at 10,000 rpm and offering 11.5 Nm of maximum torque at 7,750 rpm. The KTM 390 SMC R achieves 39 Nm of maximum torque at 7,000 rpm, and its 399 cc single-cylinder delivers a maximum of 45 hp at 8,500 rpm. The KTM 390 SMC R offers two riding modes – STREET and SPORT – allowing for individual adaptation to different riding styles. In SPORT mode, traction control can be deactivated to give experienced riders full control over their riding experience. The KTM 125 SMC R does not feature riding modes.
The transmission has been equipped with reinforced guide pins and optimized shifting mechanics, allowing for more precise and smoother gear changes. An anti-hopping clutch reduces engine braking torque and eases operation. For the KTM 390 SMC R, a Quickshifter+ (for clutchless up and downshifting) is optionally available. Good news: The maintenance intervals have been extended: after an initial oil change at 1,000 kilometers, further maintenance is only required at 10,000 kilometers.
Key Facts
KTM 125 and 390 SMC R 2025: Exhaust System, Features, and Electronics
The stainless steel exhaust system of both models saves 2 kilograms of weight by omitting a rear silencer. A dual catalytic converter ensures compliance with the Euro 5+ standard and reduces emissions through optimized combustion. The system also monitors combustion temperature and automatically adjusts it to ensure efficient exhaust cleaning.
For the first time in a KTM Supermoto, a new 4.2-inch TFT display is featured in the cockpit of both models. The anti-glare glass ensures good readability even in direct sunlight. Through the KTM Connect App, riders can operate functions such as navigation, music control, and calls directly via the display. A new control unit with optimized switches and a 4-way joystick makes it easier to manage the electronic systems. In this area, the big sister 690 SMC R sets a high standard, but the 2025 model has not yet been presented, so we can remain curious.
KTM 125 and 390 SMC R 2025: Prices and Availability
When it comes to pricing, there's reason to celebrate. The prices in Austria are exactly aligned with the Duke sibling models, with the 125 SMC R priced at 5,599 euros and the 390 SMC R at 6,999 euros. In Germany, the prices are 5,499 and 6,299 euros, while in Switzerland, they are 5,690 CHF and 6,990 CHF, respectively. The small Supermotos are expected to be available in Q1 2025, just in time for the start of the season. We are eagerly looking forward to the first test rides!
