Along with the M 1000 XR, the S 1000 XR from BMW has also undergone significant updates for 2024. Unfortunately, the latter was not included in the Bavarian press fleet, which meant we couldn't get our hands on it for quite some time. As the season comes to a close, we finally managed to secure the S 1000 XR and immediately take it on a longer tour, where it must prove not only its sporty core competencies but also its versatility and touring capabilities. Our test area is an Austrian region that is quite the insider tip among motorcyclists.

Insider Tip: Mühl- and Waldviertel as a Testing Backdrop

The BMW S 1000 XR was tested on the twisty roads of the Mühl- and Waldviertel regions in Austria. Known for their picturesque hills and lightly trafficked roads, these areas provided optimal conditions to put the capabilities of the sporty crossover to the test. Our accommodation at the Moho Motorrad Hotel Rockenschaub in Liebenau, situated at nearly 1000 meters above sea level, completed the experience with pleasant evenings and warm hospitality. Here, we were able to extensively test the XR in a versatile range of applications.

Technical Specifications BMW S 1000 XR 2024

The new BMW S 1000 XR 2024 offers several updates compared to its predecessor. The inline-four engine has been increased to 170 hp at 11,000 rpm. The maximum torque is 114 Nm, and the engine characteristics remain focused on sporty performance and being revvy.

The weight of 226 kg (wet weight) remains acceptable for a crossover bike in this performance class. Also new is a slightly altered ergonomics: the seat height has been increased by 10 mm to 840 mm, and the seat now offers a flatter shape for better comfort on long tours.

New features include the Headlight Pro with daytime running lights and adaptive cornering lights, the Keyless Ride radio key system, and a USB port. • Style Sport

  • Navigation Device Preparation
  • Intelligent Emergency Call
  • Main Stand
  • Cruise Control

The equipment of the S 1000 XR in 2024 is more lavish than ever, yet you still have to pay extra for standard touring features like heated grips, cruise control, or a luggage rack.

Touring Capability of the BMW S 1000 XR 2024

Before the S 1000 XR can let loose in the twisties of the Mühlviertel, it first has to complete the journey from Munich. The revised seat and ergonomics improve comfort compared to its predecessor, but there is still no excessive room for movement. The saddle forms a, albeit softened, dip where you inevitably find yourself. This predetermined seating position is sporty for the legs, but the upper body can switch between completely upright or a slightly forward-leaning attack position. On long stretches, you shift your behind from right to left and still wish for a bit more space to the rear. However, those accustomed to sporty bikes will feel right at home on the S 1000 XR.

BMW S 1000 XR 2024 Test

Colleague Philipp clocks 300 km in one go with the S 1000 XR. His conclusion: Tours quite nicely, but still isn't a comfort marvel.

However, the semi-active suspension remains relatively firm in "Road" mode, which can be perceived as tiring on rough roads or during long rides. The wind protection is solid, and the adjustment of the windscreen can be done single-handedly while riding. With a consumption of about 6.5 to 7 liters per 100 km, the XR is quite high, but compared to other sport touring bikes, it is roughly average for the thirsty class.

Sportiness: A Dynamic Power Bike

The S 1000 XR remains true to its sporty character and is among the most dynamic crossover models on the market. The engine impresses with its brute power in the upper rev range, which can mostly only be partially utilized on public roads. Nevertheless, the silky throttle response combined with the hunger for revs is captivating. This allows for a smooth yet powerful exit from high lean angles, and with the help of the superbly functioning quickshifter, you can swiftly rip through the gears. In lean angles, the semi-active suspension in "Dynamic Pro" mode impresses with precision and stability, although it could be even firmer at the rear for extreme sportiness.

BMW S 1000 XR 2024 Test

The BMW S 1000 XR feels right at home when leaning into corners (and so does the rider). Just be cautious when releasing the brakes while leaned over!

What stands out in the twisties are the sporty brakes. They offer a clear pressure point, require little force on the levers, and can be precisely modulated. However, during slightly harder braking, a righting moment becomes noticeable, which one must get used to. More precisely: it's not so much the righting moment itself, but the sudden absence of the moment, causing the otherwise very harmoniously steering XR to tip into the corner quite abruptly.

Thanks to the slightly forward-oriented seating position and the balanced handling, the XR is overall very well-suited for twisty roads and sporty "sending it," without having to forgo comfort features.

Price-performance ratio

The BMW S 1000 XR is a premium motorcycle that offers a lot of performance even in its standard version. Accordingly, its starting price is quite substantial. The MSRP from BMW starts at €19,280 in Germany. In Austria, you'll have to put down at least €22,690 for a new S 1000 XR 2024. If you then want to upgrade the machine and realize that some touring essentials, such as a main stand, heated grips, luggage rack, or cruise control, are optional extras, not to mention riding pleasure-enhancing components like a quickshifter and the semi-active suspension, the purchase price quickly rises steeply. It is a premium motorcycle at a premium price, but with premium performance to match. Whether it's worth it is something everyone must decide for themselves.

Conclusion: A sporty crossover with a clear target audience

On our four-day tour through northern Austria, the S 1000 XR reveals its versatile side, yet it remains focused on sporty riding. Thanks to the new ergonomics, long stretches are more comfortable than ever, though it is not a comfort miracle. However, on twisty roads, it really shows off, blasting through the curves with a loud scream, never feeling like a large, relatively heavy touring machine for even a second. To fully experience its potential, the right optional components are necessary. We highly recommend the Pro riding modes, the semi-active ESA Pro suspension, and the revised Shift Assistant Pro, provided your wallet allows it. For riders who appreciate the sporty focus and occasionally embark on longer rides, the S 1000 XR is an excellent choice.

BMW S 1000 XR 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

Gregor

The BMW S 1000 XR offers a pleasant touring motorcycle based on a supersports. It sounds like a compromise - but rides like a precisely executed development. The bike is practical and well-developed. Wind and weather protection are excellent, the integration of the smartphone is well-tested and intuitive, and the engine always brings joy. While the chassis adapts well to the load condition, it never becomes truly sensitive and comfortable. The seat comfort is good, but the knee angle becomes a bit acute on long tours. Nevertheless: A great motorcycle with which you enjoy riding both sportily and over long distances.

Riding modes adjust throttle response practically

great revvy four-cylinder engine with a widely usable power band

well-balanced vehicle - even with a pillion - thanks to electronic suspension with automatic load detection

good brakes.

Knee angle on long tours a bit tight for tall people

suspension doesn't dampen sensitively enough - no truly comfortable setup possible?

high fuel consumption
