The term funbike has almost disappeared from our minds, as manufacturers dictate what we should like. We naturally like naked bikes, but the term crossover is already used so extensively that it can mean anything. And "sensible beginner bike" sounds sensible, but not particularly desirable. Suzuki is now (finally) returning to its virtue of building affordable, comparatively low-powered, but all the more fun-to-ride, lightweight bikes - the legendary DR-Z400E and SM models were completely unexpectedly and, in my opinion, unjustly removed from the model lineup!
Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM 2025
Our prayers have finally been answered!!!
Wonderful when entry-level models can put the widest grin on our faces - Suzuki achieves this with the two new DR-Z4 models! Whether it's the DR-Z4S for dual sport fun or the DR-Z4SM for supermoto vibes - finally fun bikes with easy handling again!

Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM - absolutely contemporary evolutions of their predecessors!
Finally, they're back! With the Dual Sport Enduro DR-Z4S and the Supermoto DR-Z4SM, two 400cc bikes are hitting the scene again in 2025, reviving the concept of a fun bike! Each boasting 38 horsepower at 8000 RPM and 37 Newton meters of torque at 6500 RPM, and weighing in at 151 kilos for the DR-Z4S and 154 kilos for the DR-Z4SM, these Suzukis represent a thoroughly modernized evolution of their predecessors. Equipped with advanced electronic assistance systems (S.I.R.S.), modern aesthetics, and LED lighting, both models are up-to-date. The only apparent cost-cutting measure is the use of LCD instruments instead of TFT displays—but for the fun-packed DR-Zs, this is surely forgivable.
The engine of the Suzuki DR-Z400 - completely revamped for the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM
The compact, liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine with 398 cc displacement is indeed taken from the original DR-Z400 but has been thoroughly revised and modernized. On one hand, the engine is designed to meet the Euro 5+ emission standards, the OBD-II requirements, and the latest noise emission regulations. On the other hand, it generates strong torque across its entire operating range, offers better controllability, and reliably and linearly responds to throttle movements. To achieve all this, lightweight titanium intake valves and hollow, sodium-filled exhaust valves, new camshaft profiles, a larger intake lift, as well as optimized valve overlap and dual ignition are used.
Stable Chassis for Off-Road and Supermoto Fun
The chassis of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM also builds on the precise, nimble handling and easy maneuverability of the two DR-Z400 models - but here, too, radically modernized. A newly developed double-tube steel frame is used, which further improves stability and responds even more directly to the rider's input. At the rear, a lightweight yet robust aluminum subframe and an aluminum swingarm are installed.
High-quality suspension systems with long travel on Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM
Both models are equipped with KYB suspension components featuring long travel for both front and rear suspension. The DR-Z4S, with 280 mm of front travel and 296 mm at the rear, is particularly nimble off-road, while the DR-Z4SM, with 260 mm of front travel and 277 mm at the rear, is designed for sporty handling on supermoto tracks. The DR-Z4S features a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel fitted with IRC GP 410 Dual Purpose tires, whereas the DR-Z4SM's 17-inch front and rear wheels are equipped with Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires, which are intended to provide grip and durability in both wet and dry conditions.
Extensive, smart electronics on both DR-Zs - even fully switchable ABS!
A significant change is the introduction of the electronic ride-by-wire throttle, which not only improves throttle response and controllability compared to the previous carburetor but also enables the introduction of the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) along with the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS with three modes) and Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) with Gravel Mode. ABS is fundamentally standard, and it is pleasing and practical that the ABS on the DR-Z4SM can be deactivated for cool rear-wheel drifts, and on the DR-Z4S for off-road excursions at the rear or even completely - an absolute novelty for the otherwise safety-conscious Japanese.
