Indian Scout 101 - Engine and Performance

The Indian Scout 101 is powered by a liquid-cooled 1250cc V-twin engine that proudly delivers 111 horsepower and 110 Newton meters of torque. Notably, the engine is quite revvy, behaving unlike a typical chopper engine. Instead, it pulls strongly even at lower RPMs and continues to build power steadily, enhancing riding pleasure, especially in sporty conditions. For American standards, the Scout might almost be considered a sportbike, but even here in Europe, it is definitely classified as a sporty cruiser.

The three riding modes (Rain, Standard, Sport) offer additional flexibility. While Zonko did not test the Rain mode (fortunately, it didn't rain during the test), both Standard and Sport modes worked excellently. The Sport mode, in particular, stands out with a slightly more aggressive character, yet remains well controllable and ensures a direct but still pleasant throttle response.

Indian Scout 101 - Chassis and Handling

The chassis of the Scout 101 is simply impressive. It features a fully adjustable upside-down fork and two fully adjustable rear stereo shocks, providing an excellent feel for the road. Despite the short suspension travel, the bike offers sufficient comfort, even over uneven roads and manhole covers. This riding dynamic is supported by the 16-inch balloon tire at the rear and the 130 tire on 19 inches at the front, ensuring a stable and comfortable ride.

The handling of the Scout 101 remains remarkably agile, even with the large front wheel and chopper-like seating position. The pegs are positioned far forward, which corresponds to the classic cruiser style, yet the riding performance remains precise and smooth. Even tight corners and hairpins are mastered confidently by the bike, and in faster corners, it remains stable without starting to wobble.

Indian Scout 101 - Brakes and Electronics

The braking system of the Scout 101 operates at the highest level. With radially mounted Brembo brakes and a 320 mm dual disc at the front, it offers impressive delay, akin to what you would expect from supersports. The electronic features, including traction control and ABS, are also up-to-date and easy to use – a blessing for those who don't want to spend hours adjusting settings. However, lean angle dependence in function remains reserved for the luxury models above the Scout family.

Size Matters! Design and Comfort of the Indian Scout 101

Visually, the Scout 101 stays true to the traditional Scout line with its clear, distinctive lines. However, it has been fundamentally revised, and the new steel frame contributes to an overall improved riding feel. A not-so-small visual drawback remains the large exhaust, which appears somewhat dominant but is due to the requirements of current emission standards. A positive side effect compared to its predecessor with the dual exhaust system is that the space for saddlebags has now increased, which is particularly advantageous for longer tours.

The elegant round touchscreen display, which works flawlessly even with gloves, is a modern feature that integrates the rider's digital microcosm into the motorcycle. The seating position has also been improved: a step in the saddle provides excellent support during strong acceleration, which is also important when you give it the beans on the 101.

Indian Scout 101 2024 Price and Conclusion

The Indian Scout 101 is undoubtedly a fantastic bike, offering impressive performance, excellent handling for its class, and modern technology in an attractive overall package. However, with a price tag of over 21,000 euros in Austria and 19,000 euros in Germany, it is not exactly a bargain. For those who can do without the full equipment, including fully adjustable suspension and dual disc brakes, there are cheaper models available (see below), starting at 15,390 euros in Germany.

In conclusion, Indian has done everything right with the Scout 101. It is a bike that not only impresses visually but is also a true joy to ride. A real highlight in the cruiser segment, where you gladly take off your helmet and wonder: "Why haven't I ridden a Scout earlier?"

The Scout family will have five members in 2024.

In addition to the tested top model of the Scout 101, there are four other models in the Scout series, each catering to different rider needs in its own way.

The Scout Bobber stands out with its aggressive bobber style. Completely blacked out, it features chopped fenders, a distinctive headlight cowl, and a solo seat that emphasizes its minimalist aesthetic. Despite this, the solo seat provides surprisingly good comfort and control. Its 1250cc SpeedPlus engine delivers 107 hp and 108 Nm of torque, making it the perfect choice for sporty riders who value both style and dynamism. With its suspension shortened to 51 mm and a seat height of only 649 mm, it ensures a low, relaxed seating position, while the wide 16-inch wheels and bar-end mirrors round off the overall look of this compact yet powerful machine. Weighing only 246 kg, it is the lightest of the new Scouts, offering particularly nimble and agile handling.

The Scout Classic, on the other hand, combines the traditional design of Indian Motorcycle with modern technical features. It is rich in chrome, and its classic, deeply drawn fenders make it a real eye-catcher. The same powerful engine as in the Bobber provides the necessary power, but the Scout Classic offers a bit more comfort with improved suspension featuring 120 mm of travel at the front and 76 mm at the rear. It remains true to the traditional cruiser style with its wide 16-inch tires and classic cruiser look, making it ideal for riders who value elegance and relaxed rides.

For those seeking a sportier orientation, the Sport Scout offers the perfect package. It gives the Scout series a dynamic character, with milled triple clamps, an adjusted handlebar, and a sleek sports seat. Despite the single-disc brake at the front, the Sport Scout stands for agile performance. It shares the 13-liter tank with the other models and has a wet weight of 248 kilograms. This makes it aimed at riders who prefer sportier handling and more direct control.

The model range is rounded off by the Super Scout, the ultimate long-distance cruiser in the series. Equipped with saddlebags, spoked wheels, a high windshield, and a comfortable pillion seat with a sissy bar, it is well-prepared for long tours. The windshield and saddlebags can be easily removed, making the look flexible depending on the area of use and preference. Weighing 268 kg, it is the heaviest Scout in the portfolio, but its extensive equipment offers everything needed for extended journeys without sacrificing the well-known Scout performance.
