The Speed Twin 1200 has been a staple in Triumph's Modern Classic lineup for several years, but it wasn't the only retro bike from the Brits with twisties ambitions. It wasn't until the end of 2023 that the second sporty Modern Classic bike, the Thruxton, was removed from the lineup. Its departure now impacts the future of the Speed Twin 1200, which will hit the market in 2025 not only with numerous updates but also with its own extra sporty RS variant, which is quite similar to the Thruxton.

New Look, Same Attention to Detail - Triumph Speed Twin 1200 2025

But first, let's talk about perhaps the most important aspect of a retro motorcycle: the aesthetics have also been revamped. The Speed Twin 1200 has been modernized in its design without losing its classic character. The new tank design with curved lines and deeper cutouts at the front, which are intended to provide better knee contact, is particularly striking. A flip-up, rather than removable, gas cap underscores the classic look but is more practical when refueling. Flat aluminum side covers align flush with the throttle body covers, giving the machine a clean and sporty look. New, black powder-coated engine covers appear slimmer and more angular, contributing to the improved aesthetics. The round LED headlight is now equipped with a new daytime running light signature (DRL), complemented by a brushed aluminum bezel and an aluminum cast cover.

The exhaust system of the Speed Twin 1200 has also been visually optimized, with slimmer silencers emphasizing the continuous exhaust line. The catalytic converter remains cleverly hidden at the bottom of the engine. Another detail is the new cast aluminum wheels with seven slim pairs of spokes arranged in a turbine pattern, and the now flatter seat. The color palette of the standard variant includes three designs: Crystal White or Carnival Red with a striking "1200" graphic on the tank, as well as a more classic Aluminum Silver variant with a black double stripe. The Speed Twin 1200 RS is available in two variants: in bright Baja Orange or subtle Sapphire Black, both with golden RS decals.

New Features of the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 2025

Both new models of the Speed Twin 1200 receive an updated Bonneville 1200 twin engine, now delivering 105 HP at 7,750 RPM – an increase of 5 HP compared to the previous model. The grunty character and popular sound of the twin are retained with a 270-degree firing interval. Torque reaches up to 112 Nm at just 4,250 RPM, providing substantial thrust even from low revs. It's probably a good thing that the electronics have also been updated. Both Speed Twin 1200 models now feature lean-angle-sensitive ABS and traction control in addition to the two riding modes, Road and Rain. To manage these new systems, the display has been replaced, which might not please some retro connoisseurs. Instead of the previously installed classic analog gauges, both Speed Twin variants now get the round LC-TFT display known from Triumph's 660 models. Unfortunately, an analog variant is not available even as an accessory. When asked, the developers argued that due to various sensors and functions in the new display, it was technically not feasible to implement it differently.

New electronics and display. Traditionalists might miss the previously installed analog gauges.

Now to the model-specific changes. The chassis of the standard Speed Twin 1200 has been revised: Up front, a non-adjustable Marzocchi USD fork with a 43 mm diameter now handles the suspension duties, while at the rear, adjustable Marzocchi twin shocks with reservoirs take care of the preload. Interestingly, the suspension is overall a tad softer and more comfortable than before. At the same time, the 2025 Speed Twin is also ergonomically less sporty than the previous model. The handlebars are positioned further forward and higher than before, resulting in a more upright and relaxed seating position. A 320 mm dual-disc brake system at the front with TRIUMPH-branded radial brake calipers and standard Metzeler Sportec M9 RR tires are intended to ensure reliable braking performance and grip.

Technical Innovations of the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 RS 2025

To compensate for the now somewhat more relaxed nature of the standard Speed Twin 1200, Triumph now also offers the sharp Speed Twin 1200 RS. Equipped with a fully adjustable Marzocchi USD fork and high-quality, also fully adjustable Öhlins shocks at the rear, the RS is designed for precise and agile riding performance. With a Brembo Stylema twin-disc brake system featuring 320 mm discs, the RS also boasts high-performance braking technology, while the sportiest street tires from Metzeler, the Racetec RR K3, provide grip. All of this is combined with significantly sportier ergonomics and enhanced electronics. On the RS, the handlebars are lower and further forward, while the pegs are higher and further back. Additionally, the rear of the bike is raised, which increases the seat height but positions the rider more forward-oriented. The seat of the RS version features a roughened finish and is also adorned with quilted stitching. This is where the mentioned influence of the various Thruxton models comes into play. For those who want a very sporty setup, clip-on handlebars and a café racer hump instead of the pillion seat can be ordered from the accessories. Then the Speed Twin 1200 RS looks quite similar to the Thruxton.

Sporty riders benefit from the new Speed Twin 1200 RS with enhanced features such as the quickshifter, top-notch components, and an active riding position.

Finally, the standard Quickshifter with Blipper function on the RS is worth mentioning. This makes the RS the first model in the Modern Classics range to be equipped with a shift assistant. Unfortunately, the Quickshifter is not available as an option for the standard Speed Twin. According to Triumph, technical reasons related to the different positions of the footpeg systems are responsible for this. Additionally, the RS features the "Sport" riding mode, which makes the throttle response even more direct and adjusts the traction control for more dynamic riding conditions.

Accessories for the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 & Speed Twin 1200 RS 2025

For customization, more than 50 genuine accessories are available, including clip-on handlebars, a quilted bullet seat, or a seat cowl. These accessories are aimed at riders who want to emphasize the café racer style or customize their machine individually. Also available are accessories such as sporty handlebars, aluminum fenders, and a range of storage solutions.

Price and Availability of the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 & Speed Twin 1200 RS 2025
