One of the biggest advantages of the Burgman 400 has always been its generous space. Under the seat, there is a 42-liter storage compartment that provides enough room for a full-face helmet and a jet helmet. In our case, the storage space is complemented by an optional top case with a backrest, which can also accommodate two helmets. Additionally, two lockable glove compartments come standard, making everyday life even more comfortable.
Suzuki Burgman 400 - the Maxi-Scooter in Long Term Test 2024
Solid, albeit a bit outdated
The Suzuki Burgman 400 is one of the most well-known and established maxi-scooters on the market. With the introduction of the current generation in 2017 and the Euro-5 update in 2021, it has proven itself as a reliable companion for commuters and occasional riders alike. In 2024, we subjected the Burgman 400 to an intensive long term test to find out how it performs in everyday life and whether it still lives up to its legendary reputation.

Comfort and Storage of the Burgman 400: Proven Virtues
The seating position is typical for a maxi-scooter: upright and comfortable, with the ability to vary the leg position. The large windshield also provides excellent protection from wind and weather, which is particularly advantageous on longer rides. Riders up to a height of 1.75 m find the seating position almost perfect, while taller riders up to 1.87 m find the space adequate but might wish for a bit more legroom.
Performance and Riding Behavior: Solid but Not Exciting
The Burgman 400 offers everyday performance that is sufficient for most rides. With just over 30 hp, it accelerates briskly up to 70 km/h, but then it becomes a bit sluggish. On the highway, the scooter reaches a top speed of 140 to 145 km/h, allowing it to keep up well with traffic. However, the power is not enough for sporty overtaking maneuvers. But that's not necessarily the point of such a vehicle, especially since you can enjoy low fuel consumption of around 4 liters per 100 kilometers.

A notable point is the traction control, which has been on board since the Euro-5 update. Combined with the long wheelbase of 1580 mm and the low center of gravity, it ensures stable riding, even in challenging road conditions such as wet asphalt or tracks. However, the question arises as to how necessary this feature really is, as the Burgman remains very manageable even without traction control.
The chassis of the Burgman 400 proved to be robust and comfortable during the test. Especially on poor and uneven roads, the scooter showed its strength. Potholes and bumps were reliably absorbed without the chassis reaching its limits.
The chassis and the variable seat position (also thanks to the adjustable backrest) ensure a lot of comfort.
Everyday Usability: The Suzuki Burgman 400 as a Reliable Companion
In everyday use, the Burgman 400 impresses with its reliability and user-friendliness. Whether it's raining or the sun is shining, the scooter always offers good weather protection and is easy to handle. The brakes are powerful and provide a high level of safety, even at higher speeds.
One small downside, however, is the so-called "rubber band effect," which becomes noticeable when starting off. The delay before the CVT transmits full power makes the drivetrain feel somewhat outdated. Additionally, the loud mechanical noises during acceleration contribute to this impression. Furthermore, the display of the Burgman 400 falls short compared to more modern competing models. It is functional, but the presentation appears outdated, and settings have to be adjusted inconveniently since there are no controls for the central LCD display on the handlebars.
Functional, but visually outdated: The Burgman cockpit.
Suzuki Burgman 400 Value for Money
A critical point when considering the Burgman 400 is the price. In Austria, the price is 8,290 Euros, and in Germany, it is 8,200 Euros. When comparing this price with other Japanese scooters of the same class, the Burgman seems somewhat overpriced. While purchasing a Suzuki Burgman ensures proven quality and reliability, there are competitors that offer similar or better features at a lower price.
