A comparison - because the options are missing!

We are well aware that comparing these motorcycles is somewhat challenging. But what can we do? Yamaha only offers the R6 as a race version now, thus missing out on the renaissance of the 600cc supersports. There have been long-standing rumors about an R9, but Yamaha has yet to make any concrete announcements. Therefore, the GP fits the pattern of modern sports bikes the best and must face the purebred 600cc contenders.

The three motorcycles, Honda CBR600RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, and Yamaha XSR900 GP, each offer unique characteristics and are designed for different types of riders. The Honda CBR600RR is distinguished by its compact 599cc engine that delivers 119 hp, making it particularly suitable for riders who appreciate light and agile handling. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R impresses with a slightly larger 636cc engine and an impressive output of 124 hp, coupled with a high torque of 69 Nm, making it ideal for sporty rides and dynamic acceleration. The Yamaha XSR900 GP, on the other hand, combines retro design with modern technology. Its 889cc triple engine delivers 119 hp and an impressive torque of 93 Nm, ensuring powerful and smooth rides. While the Honda and Kawasaki are clear supersports, the Yamaha offers an interesting mix of classic style and contemporary performance, making it an exciting option for riders who value both style and performance.

'Standard Tires: The Bridgestone S23'

Despite these differences, fairness in tire selection remains a priority. For the Supersport motorcycle test, a standardized tire was used: the Bridgestone S23. This tire is renowned for its balanced performance and versatility on various road surfaces. The Bridgestone S23 offers reliable traction and stability, both at high speeds and in corners. Its rubber compound and tread design are engineered to ensure even wear and good longevity. This allowed the editors to ride the motorcycles safely and controlled under different conditions, making the Bridgestone S23 a suitable choice for the test.

Honda CBR600RR Experiences

The Honda CBR600RR immediately impresses with its extremely precise chassis setup, which particularly shines on twisty road sections. The engine of the CBR600RR is revvy and provides ample power both on the race track and on the road. Particularly noteworthy are the excellent brakes, which convey a secure riding feeling.

In terms of ergonomics, the Honda offers a sporty but not overly aggressive seating position. This makes it suitable for longer rides on the road as well. However, the heat buildup from the classic underseat exhaust can be bothersome on longer rides, especially for the pillion.

In terms of electronics and features, the CBR600RR comes equipped with modern elements such as an easily readable TFT display and advanced traction control systems. The quickshifter works excellently, though it requires slightly firmer inputs compared to its competitors. The sound of the CBR600RR is impressive, providing an authentic racing feel even without an aftermarket exhaust.

Impressions with the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R

The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R stands out with its 636cc engine, giving it a significant advantage in low-end grunt. However, the chassis feels less precise in comparison and offers less feedback, which slightly affects the riding experience.

The seating position of the Ninja ZX-6R is very aggressive, with an extreme knee angle and low clip-on handlebars. This makes riding both on the road and on the race track exhausting. The overall ergonomics are not designed for relaxed riding.

In terms of electronics and features, the Ninja ZX-6R lags behind. It lacks modern features such as ride-by-wire and a blipper, and the display is not up to the latest technological standards. The ZX-6R's quickshifter is very smooth, which might appeal to some riders who prefer a gentle shift.

Yamaha XSR900 GP Insights

The Yamaha XSR900 GP stands out with its 900cc triple engine, giving it a significant displacement advantage. This makes it particularly powerful on the road. The chassis offers an excellent compromise between sporty performance and comfort, which makes handling easier even at higher speeds.

The XSR900 GP offers a more relaxed seating position compared to the other two bikes, making it more comfortable for longer rides. The sporty seating position is not too aggressive and provides good wind protection. In terms of electronics and features, the Yamaha is very well-equipped. A large TFT display, cruise control, and modern controls are standard features. The quickshifter on the XSR900 GP works the best in comparison and ensures a pleasant riding experience. The powerful sound of the triple engine completes the positive overall picture.

Conclusion: Honda CBR600RR vs. Kawasaki ZX-6R vs. Yamaha XSR900 GP

For riders who primarily ride on the street and are looking for a comfortable, high-performance bike, the Yamaha XSR900 GP is the best choice. On the other hand, those seeking ultimate performance on the race track will be happiest with the Honda CBR600RR. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R offers an interesting compromise, but it doesn't quite match the other two on either the street or the race track.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

Der Horvath

The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R impresses with a powerful 636cc engine and dynamic handling, making it a highly potent and sportily tuned machine. The well-functioning quickshifter and the clear display contribute to a positive riding experience. However, the aggressive seating position significantly impacts comfort, and the absence of a modern ride-by-wire system prevents the use of a blipper, making the ZX-6R appear outdated compared to competing models. Overall, it is an excellent choice for sportily ambitious riders but offers room for improvement in terms of comfort and modern features.

'powerful 636cc engine with plenty of grunt and power

well-functioning quickshifter for upshifts

good handling and pleasant riding feel

clear and easy-to-read display

sport-tuned chassis

reliable brakes'

'Missing ride-by-wire system - hence no blipper

aggressive seating position with sharp knee angle and inward-turned clip-ons

lack of comfort for longer rides

somewhat spartan display compared to the competition'

Honda CBR600RR 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

Der Horvath

The Honda CBR600RR impresses as a sporty bike with remarkable riding pleasure and precise handling. The well-tuned chassis, powerful brakes, and reliable quickshifter ensure an excellent riding experience, especially on twisty roads. The comfortable seating position and modern display further contribute to the positive overall impression. However, there are some drawbacks: the heat development from the underseat exhaust can become uncomfortable in urban traffic and during slow rides, and the engine's performance at low revs leaves something to be desired. Additionally, the soft suspension can reach its limits on the race track. Overall, the CBR600RR is an excellent bike for sporty riders who are willing to accept these compromises.

'Outstanding riding pleasure and precise handling

Powerful and well-modulated brakes

Reliable quickshifter

Comfortable, sporty seating position

Modern display and high-quality controls'

Strong heat development of the underseat exhaust during slow rides

Lack of torque and power at low revs

Soft suspension can be disadvantageous on the race track

Yamaha XSR900 GP 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

Der Horvath

A credible styling in the vein of the 500cc GP machines from around 1990 meets the most modern components from the CP3 modular system. For the suspension components, Yamaha relied on high-quality, fully adjustable parts from KYB. The fork is the same as the one used in the MT-09 SP. The sporty base setup fits perfectly with this stunning retro-racer. The standard electronic equipment is also impressive. All riding aids operate lean-angle dependent, the quickshifter works excellently, and there's even a cruise control on board. Those who can handle the sporty seating position will enjoy a dream motorcycle. Apart from the brakes, which could use a bit more bite, we have no real criticism to offer.

'High-quality and fully adjustable suspension

powerful and refined engine

credible retro styling

loving details

extensive standard features

Bridgestone S23 tires from the factory'

'Indicator switch takes getting used to

brakes could be more powerful'
