Benelli TRK 702 X - A Bike with Great Potential

Looking at the sales statistics in Italy, as of summer 2023, the best-selling motorcycle was still the smaller brother of the TRK 702 X, the TRK 502. This fact proves that Benelli is celebrated as a reliable and accessible brand by our colleagues in the south. In Switzerland, Austria, and Germany, the TRK 502 has not had it so easy, as we in the German-speaking region tend to opt for higher-powered vehicles. Therefore, the TRK 702 X strikes a very interesting chord in the German-speaking market. It is clear that the TRK 702 X does not aim to challenge the high-performance horses in the adventure bike stable, but it brings several compelling arguments to the table that could steal the heart of one or another biker.

Engine, Power, and More Facts about the Benelli TRK 702X

The engine of the Benelli TRK 702 X is a 698 cc parallel-twin that delivers 75 hp at 8,500 rpm and 68 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. This engine ensures a very smooth power delivery and brings enough grunt to the ground.

The chassis setup of the TRK 702 X is very pleasant. The upside-down fork at the front and the adjustable rear suspension offer a balanced mix of comfort and sportiness. On the road, the bike feels stable and precise, while the 19-inch front wheel in the "X" model version also makes it suitable for off-road use.

In terms of braking, the Benelli TRK 702 X is equipped with brand-specific brakes. At the front, there are dual disc brakes and a single disc brake at the rear. The braking performance feels right, although with a dry weight of around 235 kilograms, you have to really send it to bring the bike to a stop.

Benelli TRK 702 X - Comfort and Features

Comfort is a top priority for the Benelli TRK 702 X. The seat is comfortable, ensuring a cozy ride even on long journeys. The seat height of 830 mm provides a good overview and allows for a relaxed upper body position.

The cockpit is modern and clearly designed. A large TFT display provides all important information at a glance, including speed, RPM, fuel gauge, and more. The menu navigation is intuitive and easy to use. However, the display can quickly cause confusion. It has an integrated connectivity function that allows the mobile device and headset to be paired with the motorcycle. This would enable the mirroring of map material onto the display. So far, so good. However, to activate the map function on the display, you need to download an app that gives a non-European impression and is characterized by Chinese characters. While you can view the map after registration, entering navigation destinations requires an annual subscription fee of around 30 euros. Due to this cumbersome method, conventional navigation with Calimoto via mobile phone directly or with classic navigation devices is worthwhile.

The equipment of the Benelli is forward-looking on the one hand, as seen in the pleasing choice of USB-C as a power connection. Additionally, not only heated grips but also a heated seat are optionally available to achieve maximum comfort all year round. In terms of lighting, the TRK 702 X relies on LED headlights for daylight as well as for low beam.

Unfortunately, the bike does not come with a cruise control, neither as standard nor as a retrofit option. This is a frustrating point, especially for globetrotters or highway users. A quickshifter is also foreign to the Benelli from the factory. Here, third-party providers offer help - however, in the future, especially for a touring motorcycle of this style, the option of a quickshifter would definitely be welcome.

The luggage set of the Benelli TRK 702 X stows any helmet in the top case without problems and offers plenty of space for everyday shopping or longer trips.

A Weekend with the Benelli TRK 702 X in Switzerland - Experience Report

As I prepared for the first ride in Avenches, I immediately noticed the beautiful lines and well-executed design. The Benelli generally looks very mature and high-quality. When you swing into the saddle of the TRK 702 X, you realize just how much bike you actually have to move. The mass can seem intimidating at first glance. The fact that you sit much more inside the bike than on top of it reinforces this effect. However, once you start rolling, this fear magically disappears. The TRK 702 X accelerates very gently and controlled. The good balance and finely tuned clutch inspire a lot of confidence. After just a few meters, it was clear to me that this bike is also great for beginners. The power develops well already in the lower RPM range, so a throttle restriction to 35 kW (which Benelli offers from the factory) wouldn't cause any problems.

After setting off and covering the first few kilometers, I noticed that my knees were already more strained than is usually the case with adventure bikes. This is due to the very steep knee angle. The reason for this is the geometric interplay of seat height, footpeg placement, and tank shape. At my height of 1.80 meters, I found the leg position rather restricted. The upper body, on the other hand, felt exceptionally good. With the 19-inch front wheel - compared to the 17-inch of the standard TRK 702 - you sit even more upright. The handlebar is very upright and allows for an ergonomically natural seating position. Surprisingly, the rather small-looking windshield provides very good protection against turbulence on the highway. After the 1.5-hour highway ride, my conclusion was clear: the legs have to suffer, but the comfort for the upper body makes up for the strain.

Over the weekend, the Benelli TRK 702 X grew increasingly likable to me. Just enjoying the bike, without endless menu scrolling and adjusting riding modes, which don't exist anyway. The TRK 702 X rides very straight and extremely controlled. It bites into corners very eagerly and with a lot of feedback for an adventure bike in this price range. Thanks to the spoked wheels and light off-road tires, I also tackled one or two harmless gravel paths over the weekend. The confidence that this bike gives you to continue on an adventure even when the asphalt runs out is more than enough.

The range of the TRK 702 X was also impressive. With a consumption between 4.5 and 5 liters and the 20-liter tank, you can cover a good 400 kilometers before you have to refuel the Italian beauty again.

TRK 702 X vs TRK 702 - Noticeable Difference?

Comparing the two models based on the numbers is extremely difficult, as there are no clear data available from the manufacturer Benelli and the information varies from country to country. Personally, I found the TRK 702 X to be the clear favorite, with many noticeable differences, especially in the chassis. While the TRK 702 provides little feedback in the twisties and shakes the body even on minor road bumps, the TRK 702 X handles the situation much more relaxed, smooth, and elegant. Thanks to the 19-inch spoked front wheel, the bike feels much more capable of tackling challenges in any situation.

For an additional CHF 200 compared to the standard model, the 702 X promises more quality and fun. Only for riders of smaller stature is the standard TRK 702 recommended, as it has a seat height of 790 mm.
