The Honda CB500 Hornet presents itself as a true gentleman among compact naked bikes. With its twin-cylinder engine delivering 471 cc displacement and 48 hp at 8600 rpm, it offers a smooth yet powerful performance. The torque of 43 Nm at 6500 rpm ensures decent propulsion, especially when you wind out the engine from higher revs. 1000PS camera guru Schaaf also sees a significant improvement here compared to older CB500 models, particularly in the calm and vibration-free engine performance.

The helmets in the 1000PS naked bike test

For a cool head during this test, the HJC RPHA 71 Carbon was the helmet of choice. The helmet impressed the 1000PS crew with its pleasantly neutral aerodynamics, which ensure fatigue-free riding even on longer trips. Additionally, the effective ventilation performance and reliable heat dissipation on hot days are noteworthy. The carbon model not only looks incredibly classy, but it is also noticeably lighter than the base version of the RPHA 71. The visor mechanism, with an additional sun visor, works flawlessly. The fit is comfortable, and the sizing covers a wide range within the 1000PS editorial team - all our editors felt comfortable! We highly recommend it.

1000PS Naked Bike Test 2024 - The Points Rating

During the test, we rode a total of 10 motorcycles in a direct comparison. The motorcycles were in different displacement classes. Nevertheless, we evaluated the motorcycles using the same evaluation scheme. The categories in the test protocol include aspects such as engine comfort and modulation, engine revviness, torque, engine power, gearbox, quickshifter, clutch, traction control regulation, traction control adjustment options, switch quality, and control logic. Additionally, aspects such as stability, handling, precision, suspension quality and adjustment range, brakes, modulatability, and effectiveness were evaluated. Each test rider gave their individual rating, which was then averaged for each category and ultimately led to an overall rating. The best motorcycle in each category was rated "1," and the worst motorcycle in the category was rated "10." For our readers, these tables are interesting for two reasons. On the one hand, they can see in which areas individual motorcycles are above average and in which areas they are below average - always considering that the price and displacement classes are very different. On the other hand, you can click through all the reports and results here and directly compare your favorites - regardless of price and displacement class.

Excerpts from the Test Protocols - Honda Hornet 500 in the Naked Bike Test 2024 by 1000PS

Engine Performance and Characteristics of the Honda CB500 Hornet

The Honda CB500 Hornet presents itself as a true gentleman among naked bikes. With its twin-cylinder engine delivering 471 cc and 48 hp at 8600 rpm, it offers a smooth yet powerful performance. The torque of 43 Nm at 6500 rpm ensures decent propulsion, especially when the engine is pushed from higher revs. Zonko highlights that despite its lower power compared to the Yamaha MT-09, the engine is lively and sufficient for the A2 class. Marek praises the pleasant high-revving character of the engine and the excellent running smoothness, which is noticeable even at low revs. Schaaf also sees a significant improvement compared to older CB500 models, particularly in the calm and vibration-free engine performance.

Transmission and Clutch of the Honda CB500 Hornet

A precise and easily shiftable transmission is standard on the Honda CB500 Hornet. Martin Bauer highlights the easy-to-use clutch and precise shifting, which are on the same high level as the Kawasaki Z 500. Marek appreciates the clarity of the display, which shows all important information such as the current gear, rpm, and speed in an easy-to-read manner. Although a quickshifter is not available, the smooth yet precise shifting ensures a pleasant riding experience.

Electronic Assistance Systems of the Honda CB500 Hornet

The Honda CB500 Hornet is equipped with traction control, which provides additional safety. The assistance systems are easy to use and offer a good level of safety without being overly intrusive.

Ergonomics and Handling of the Honda CB500 Hornet

The seating position of the Honda CB500 Hornet is comfortable, albeit less direct compared to sportier models like the KTM 390 Duke or the Kawasaki Z 500. Marek, although quite tall at 1.86 m, found the motorcycle comfortable and user-friendly despite his size. The display is clear and easy to read, facilitating operation.

Chassis and Handling of the Honda CB500 Hornet

The chassis of the Honda CB500 Hornet is stable and comfortable. Schaaf praises the significant improvement over older models, especially the stability in lean angles and on uneven roads. Kurt Rubik highlights that the Honda feels like a mature motorcycle compared to the KTM 390 Duke, stable and secure. However, he warns that the chassis can be overwhelmed during sporty riding or with heavier riders, as the rear tends to rebound too quickly on rough surfaces.

Brakes of the Honda CB500 Hornet

The braking system of the Honda CB500 Hornet is a highlight in this class. Martin Bauer praises the powerful brakes with dual discs at the front, which grip better than the competition in this league. The brakes are precise and offer excellent deceleration, providing a secure feeling in critical situations. Schaaf and Kurt Rubik agree that the brakes are convincing both in terms of modulation and performance.

Miscellaneous about the Honda CB500 Hornet

Overall, the Honda CB500 Hornet is a well-balanced motorcycle that impresses both at slow and fast speeds. Schaaf highlights the pleasant damping of the chassis, while Martin Bauer praises the better running smoothness of the engine compared to the competition.

Conclusion on the Honda CB500 Hornet

The Honda CB500 Hornet proves to be a mature and well-balanced naked bike, making it an excellent choice in the A2 class. While the Hornet feels less direct and a bit heavier compared to more aggressive models like the KTM 390 Duke, it still offers a safe and confidence-inspiring riding experience. It is vibration-free and well-built, making it a reliable companion for both beginners and experienced riders. The clear display and easy handling further contribute to the positive overall impression. The Honda CB500 Hornet scores particularly with its balance between riding pleasure and safety, confirming its name as a worthy successor to the CB series.

Zonko's experiences with the CB500 Hornet

Zonko has ridden many Hornets in his life and does not consider the new Honda CB500 Hornet to be a mislabeling, even though it was renamed from a CB500 to a Hornet. Despite his initial skepticism, he felt comfortable in the saddle. On a selective route with unpredictable bumps, the chassis remained stable and did not oscillate, which positively surprised him. Even though the Hornet was previously known for its 600cc four-cylinder engine, he sees the expansion downward as a worthy development. For the A2 class, he finds the Honda CB500 Hornet to be a really cool bike and considers the name Hornet to be justified.

Schaaf's impression of the Honda CB500 Hornet

Schaaf, who extensively rode the predecessor model, the CB500, views the new Honda CB500 Hornet as a significant evolution. Although there is a parallel between 1994 and 2024 in the necessity for high revs to achieve decent propulsion, the chassis has seen substantial improvements. While the old CB500 tended to wobble slightly in lean angles with light waves, the new Hornet remains stable and offers pleasant damping at the same time. Schaaf appreciates the light steering behavior and the comfortable seating position.

The Honda brakes are easy to modulate but require a bit more pressure for full braking power. However, in any case, the dual disc offers large reserves. Vibrations at normal speeds are hardly present, making criticism difficult. Schaaf notes that a shorter gear ratio would be advantageous, as the engine only becomes really exciting at higher revs.

Although the Honda CB500 Hornet weighs 190 kg fully fueled and is thus heavier than the Vitpilen 401 or the Z 500, Schaaf does not find the weight to be negative in practice. The Honda remains agile and nimble, even if it does not achieve the ultimate agility of the Vitpilen. Overall, the Honda CB500 Hornet is a well-balanced bike for Schaaf, convincing both in slow and fast rides.

Martin Bauer's assessment of the Honda CB500 Hornet compared to the Z 500 SE

The experienced motorcycle expert Martin Bauer directly compares the Honda CB500 Hornet with the Kawasaki Z500 SE in the same class. He notes that the seating position of the Hornet is less direct than that of the Kawasaki, which makes you feel more like a passenger rather than actively involved in the action. In terms of engine performance, he sees the Kawasaki slightly ahead but praises the significantly better smoothness of the Honda. This is evident in the vibration-free throttle response and the smooth running, even at full throttle from a standstill.

The operation of the Honda is simple and user-friendly, with a light clutch and precise shifting that are on the same high level as the Kawasaki. Another plus point for the Honda is the braking system: As the only motorcycle in this class with a dual-disc brake at the front, it offers better deceleration and sharper responsiveness than the Kawasaki, whose brakes are more indirect and less precise.

Despite these advantages, Bauer would overall prefer the Kawasaki, as it offers better riding dynamics, higher engine performance, and more direct chassis feedback. Nevertheless, he emphasizes that both motorcycles operate at a very high level, with the Honda scoring points for its excellent engine smoothness, while the Kawasaki is superior in riding dynamics.

Kurt Rubik's comparison of the Honda CB500 Hornet with the KTM 390 Duke

Kurt Rubik describes the Honda CB500 Hornet in comparison to the KTM 390 Duke as the more mature and stable motorcycle. While the Duke is designed for fun and agility, practically inviting playful and aggressive riding, the Hornet conveys a sense of safety and stability. Rubik emphasizes that the Honda Hornet always has reserves and nothing can go wrong, making it a reliable companion.

For Rubik, the Honda CB500 Hornet stands out from all other naked bikes in the 400-500cc class by offering the most mature and solid riding experience. He particularly praises the Hornet's brakes, which are not only powerful but also precise and confidence-inspiring. Additionally, he highlights the excellent engine smoothness and high build quality, which convey the feeling of a "real big bike."
