The KTM 390 Duke is equipped with a single-cylinder engine that delivers 45 HP at 8500 RPM and 39 Nm of torque at 7000 RPM. On paper, this sounds quite decent, but the devil is in the details. Martin Bauer, one of our experienced test riders, notes that the single-cylinder in this small displacement is rather unimpressive. The usable rev range is limited to about 2000 RPM above the mid-range, and even then, it typically doesn't go much further in a single-cylinder manner. The power delivery is inconsistent, indicating insufficient engine setup. Zonko also confirms that the limited rev range and harsh power delivery when shifting up reduce the riding pleasure. Despite these limitations, the engine offers a certain agility and sportiness that could be quite appealing to young, adventurous riders.

1000PS Naked Bike Test 2024 - The Points Rating

During the test, we rode a total of 10 motorcycles in a direct comparison. The motorcycles were in different displacement classes. Nevertheless, we evaluated the motorcycles using the same evaluation scheme. The categories in the test protocol include aspects such as engine comfort and modulation, engine revviness, pull, engine power, gearbox, quickshifter, clutch, traction control regulation, traction control adjustability, quality of switches, and logic of controls. Additionally, aspects such as stability, handling, precision, suspension quality and adjustment range, brake modulation, and effectiveness were evaluated. Each test rider provided their individual rating, which was then averaged for each category and ultimately led to an overall rating. The best motorcycle in each category was rated “1”, while the worst motorcycle in the category was rated “10”. For our readers, these tables are interesting for two reasons. On the one hand, they can see in which areas individual motorcycles are above average and in which areas they are below average - always considering that the price and displacement classes are very different. On the other hand, you can click through all the reports and results here and directly compare your favorites - regardless of price and displacement class.

Transmission and Clutch of the KTM 390 Duke: Test and Evaluation

The gearbox of the KTM 390 Duke is equipped with a quickshifter, which theoretically should allow for seamless gear changes. In practice, however, it turns out that upshifting is often accompanied by harsh jolts, which both Zonko and Marek find disturbing. While the blipper works well when downshifting and rolls smoothly into the twisties, the quickshifter disappoints when upshifting. Marek adds that the gear ratio is not optimal for urban riding, as the engine becomes sluggish in higher gears at low RPMs. This makes using the full RPM range more difficult and requires more frequent shifting, which impairs riding comfort.

KTM 390 Duke - Leading Assistance Systems in the 400cc Class

The KTM 390 Duke scores with a variety of electronic assistance systems that are impressive for a motorcycle of this class. These include cornering ABS, lean-angle-dependent traction control, and various riding modes such as Street, Rain, and Sport. NastyNils praises the riding aids, which made it impossible for him to unsettle the bike, even during extreme maneuvers on wet roads. These assistance systems significantly contribute to the rider's safety and confidence, making the KTM 390 Duke a stable companion in everyday urban traffic as well as during sporty rides. On the other hand, these riding aids can also be adjusted in various ways to immediately perform small stunts with the bike.

Radical seating position on the KTM 390 Duke

The ergonomics of the KTM 390 Duke are polarizing. Many riders describe the seating position as unusual and uncomfortable. Zonko finds the front-heavy posture disturbing and unsuitable for his riding style. Marek emphasizes that taller riders need to tilt their heads down to see the display, which can be uncomfortable on longer rides. The bike feels compact and light, which could be advantageous for younger and smaller riders. Stunt pilot Kurt Rubik, on the other hand, sees an advantage in the seating position for stunts and describes the Duke 390 as an ideal bike for wheelies and other tricks.

Chassis and Handling of the KTM 390 Duke 2024 in the Naked Bike Test 2024

The chassis of the KTM 390 Duke is adjustable and offers customization options both front and rear. Martin Bauer praises the stability and good feedback of the chassis, although it is tuned on the firmer side and transmits bumps more strongly. NastyNils appreciates the agile and playful handling, which particularly shines in urban traffic and on twisty roads. Marek describes the handling as very easy, allowing him to effortlessly throw the bike into corners. The WP suspension contributes to the sportiness and agility of the Duke, although it may feel a bit cramped for taller riders. Overall, the 390 Duke is a very playful fun bike. It appeals to riders who enjoy having fun in the saddle. This comes somewhat at the expense of comfort, which might make beginners a bit nervous. The fact is: the design of the Duke fits perfectly with the riding performance of the machine!

Brakes KTM 390 Duke 2024

The brakes on the KTM 390 Duke receive mixed reviews from the test riders. While NastyNils describes the braking performance as strong and reliable, Marek notes that the quality of the brake calipers is not optimal. However, the ABS setup and overall braking performance are commendable, as they offer a high level of safety. Zonko reports good control and stability even during extreme braking maneuvers, making the Duke a reliable partner in terms of braking.

The KTM 390 Duke in the big 1000PS Naked Bike Test 2024

The KTM 390 Duke is a motorcycle that can polarize opinions. Its strengths lie in its extensive electronic features, agile handling, and its ability to serve as a fun bike for young riders. However, the firm seating position and inconsistent engine setup might be off-putting for experienced riders. Nevertheless, the KTM 390 Duke offers a lot of riding pleasure, especially in urban environments and during spirited rides. Its playful nature and good features make it an interesting candidate in the 2024 naked bike segment. Those looking for a light, agile, and technologically advanced motorcycle suitable for stunts and short rides will surely enjoy the KTM 390 Duke. Overall, a clear rule applied to the Duke: the younger the riders and the greater the desire for wheelies, the more popular the 390 Duke was. Riders with more experience found the Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 to be a better alternative!

The helmets in the 1000PS naked bike test

To keep a cool head during this test, we used the HJC RPHA 71 Carbon. The helmet impressed the 1000PS crew with its pleasantly neutral aerodynamics, which ensure fatigue-free riding even on longer trips. Additionally, the effective ventilation performance and reliable heat dissipation on hot days are noteworthy. The carbon model not only looks super classy but is also noticeably lighter than the base version of the RPHA 71. The visor mechanism with an additional sun visor works flawlessly. The fit is comfortable, and the sizing covers a wide range within the 1000PS editorial team - all our editors felt comfortable! We highly recommend it.
