BMW F900 GS 2024 Test

The F 850 GS successor is unrecognizable!

The BMW F 850 GS has become the F 900 GS and with it come big changes. The Bavarian mid-range GS takes several steps in the direction of loose terrain. A good further development? We tested it at the first presentation in Andalusia.

The BMW F 850 GS is the largest GS model with a genuine 21-inch enduro front wheel. This already indicates its off-road capabilities. Weighing in at 233 kg, it is not far behind its larger boxer engine sister, positioning itself more as a comfortable long-distance tourer. This is why it is not often compared to other off-road capable adventure bikes like the Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, Honda Africa Twin, or KTM 890 Adventure. However, with the recent update and upgrade to the F 900 GS, BMW has made significant changes to transform it from a heavy all-rounder into a high-performance single-purpose motorcycle.

BMW F 900 GS 2024 - All innovations & differences to the F 850 GS

But what's new about the BMW Enduro F 900 GS? Almost everything, as only 20% of the components from the previous model, the F 850 GS, remain. The heart of the F 900 GS is a larger two-cylinder in-line engine, now with 895cc instead of 853cc, providing increased power and torque. With 105 hp at 8,500 rpm and 93 Nm at 6,750 rpm, the F 900 GS offers a more superior performance. In addition, modern electronics are included, such as two riding modes (Rain and Road), as well as ABS Pro and DTC as standard features. However, despite the increased power, the F 900 GS is not necessarily more suitable for off-road riding. Weight reduction would be necessary for that.

In general, it is said that there is a weight reduction of 14 kilograms compared to the previous model. This was mainly achieved by using a significantly lighter plastic tank and a revised rear design. Additionally, the bodywork perimeter of the BMW Enduro has been redesigned, resulting not only in a more modern appearance but also in aerodynamic improvements. A new, fully adjustable upside-down telescopic fork has been introduced. The front spring travel is 230 mm and the rear is 215 mm. The fork is from Showa, while the suspension strut is from ZF-Sachs, in both versions. In addition to the standard suspension with a 43 mm fork, there is also an optional variant for the BMW Enduro from the same manufacturers, with identical spring travel but in a higher-quality version. The Showa fork increases to 45 mm, offers a harder spring rate, titanium nitride coating for less resistance during spring movements, and a 25% greater adjustment range. The optional ZF-Sachs shock absorber comes with compensation reservoirs, full manual adjustability, and even high and low-speed damping settings. The bike's swingarm has also been revised to make it lighter, and a lightweight Akrapovic sports exhaust now adorns the rear as standard. The ergonomics have also been changed to make the BMW Enduro easier to handle when stationary, with features such as Enduro footrests, an adapted foot brake lever, and handguards as standard. The optional Enduro Pro package is available for true enduro enthusiasts. Other features, such as keyless systems for the BMW Enduro model series, are also available. For more details on all the new features, you can read the New features report on the new GS models. The question at hand is how these changes affect the riding experience, both on and off-road.

BMW F 900 GS 2024 - Ergonomics and handling

The BMW Enduro F 900 GS has a seat height of 870 mm, slightly higher than its predecessor, but still manageable. With weight reduction and a plastic tank, the center of gravity is low. The narrow waist suits off-road riding, making maneuvering and reaching the ground easy. Shorter riders can choose a lower rally seat bench, reducing the seat height to 835 mm. For further adjustment, a lowering kit can bring the F 900 GS down to 815 mm, though suspension adjustability is lost. Taller riders can opt for a high seat bench at 890 mm. Precise power delivery and a finely adjustable clutch make slow speed maneuvers effortless. The streamlined design not only reduces weight but also improves the silhouette, providing a better overview and confidence for the rider. The knee angle is suitable for touring on this enduro bike.

BMW F 900 GS 2024 on the country road

During our test day with the BMW F 900 GS, we had the opportunity to ride two different versions of this versatile Enduro bike. On the road, we tested the standard configuration, which did not include the engine protection plate, the upgraded chassis, or off-road tires. Instead, we rode on the Bridgestone Battlax A41 tires, equipped with the optional Dynamic package featuring the Dynamic riding mode and quickshifter.

The BMW F 900 GS tested by us in road trim, including Dynamic Package, high windshield and road tires in the form of the Bridgestone Battlex A41.

Without a direct comparison, it is always very difficult to judge smaller performance leaps between updates, but the BMW F 900 GS already feels more exciting. The in-line two-cylinder is still not a character engine, but 10 hp more and above all the reduced weight make it more lively through the bends. The throttle can be applied very cleanly, with the different riding modes making a big difference to the throttle response. In Rain mode, the rider gently adds horsepower with velvety gloves, while in Dynamic mode, a sensitive throttle hand is required to avoid firing out of the radius too abruptly. If you leave the throttle off, the engine gets going at around 4,500 revs and picks up again at around 6,500 - 7,000 revs, but the fairly linear power delivery always remains predictable. Gear changes are quick and crisp with the quickshifter, even if the shift assistant requires a little more force on the lever than the competition. The Akra exhaust also turns the ride into a beautifully rumbling, V2-like sound experience thanks to the offset of the stroke journal.

BMW F 900 GS Test

The F 900 GS cuts a fine figure on tarmac. However, heavy riders would like more damping at the rear.

The brakes on the BMW F 900 GS are designed to be quite sensitive for off-road use, requiring a bit more force on the lever for harder deceleration on pavement. However, the 305 mm twin discs with two-piston brake calipers at the front and the 265 mm disc with single-piston brake caliper provide reliable braking with good modulation, especially in solo mode. The front fork performs well when braking into a bend, maintaining stability and offering enough cushioning for bumps. On the other hand, the rear suspension may vibrate slightly on bumps, particularly for heavier riders. Riders of larger stature may desire more damping on the standard shock absorber, which is only adjustable in preload and rebound. During the off-road portion of the day, the optional suspension demonstrates significantly improved performance on the asphalt connecting routes.

BMW F 900 GS 2024 Offroad Performance

The F 900 GS Trophy model with Tricolor design comes with a slightly more off-road focus straight from the factory. Along with the tinted windshield, it features sturdy Enduro handguards and an engine protection plate. Additionally, it is equipped with the Enduro Pro package, which includes optional suspension, handlebar risers, and the more durable M Endurance chain. Our test bikes for off-road adventures were fitted with Metzeler Karoo 4 off-road tires, Enduro and Enduro Pro riding modes, the Dynamic package, and the optional sports seat.

The F 900 GS tested by us in the Trophy version with off-road equipment, including Enduro Pro package, engine guard, Metzeler Karroo 4 tires and Dynamic Pro package.

We take on the challenge of exploring the many unpaved roads and single trails of Andalusia with the BMW F 900 GS Enduro. The terrain ranges from hard-packed dirt tracks to fine gravel roads, damp soft earth, and a deep mix of sand and gravel. Right from the start, you can feel that the F 900 GS is in its element here. The upright riding position feels natural, thanks to the ergonomic adjustments. With the Enduro Pro package's risers, you can assume a more relaxed standing position on the high handlebars for touring. The slim waist and Enduro footrests provide a solid stance. The fully adjustable levers, including the off-road foot brake lever risers, are a great asset. The F 900 GS handles off-road riding with speed and confidence, thanks to its low center of gravity from the plastic tank, allowing for precise and playful maneuvering through the footrests. It never feels bulky or awkward, a significant improvement over the F 850 GS. The tank edges may slightly hinder maneuverability on steeper terrain or during prolonged throttle-up sections.

BMW F 900 GS Offroad Test 2024

The BMW F 900 GS is playful and performs very well on loose terrain. A big difference to the F 850 GS.

The standout feature of the BMW F 900 GS Enduro is its exceptional optional suspension. The stiffer spring rate allows for smooth handling over rough terrain, with adjustable parameters for customization. The Enduro mode offers a conservative setting for relaxed gravel rides, while the fully configurable Enduro Pro mode is recommended for more challenging conditions. Riders can adjust traction control, ABS Pro, and throttle response to their preference. The bike excels at slow speeds and technical maneuvers, thanks to a smooth clutch and agile handling. Overall, the F 900 GS Enduro offers a well-balanced combination of ergonomics, engine performance, chassis design, brakes, and electronics.

BMW F 900 GS Test 2024

The configurable Enduro Pro mode and the optional suspension are must-have accessories on the F 900 GS. Only with them does it unfold its true potential.

Adventure suitability of the BMW F 900 GS 2024

However, the current performance of the BMW Enduro does not make it a great touring bike. It is more suited for tackling rough terrain far from home, where reliability and practicality are key. In essence, this motorcycle is designed for adventure.

BMW F 900 GS 2024

The rims were unfortunately taken from the F 850 GS. Unfortunately, because there are no optional wheels with inner tubes for the tubeless tires. A risk in rocky terrain with the risk of rim chipping.

BMW has chosen not to include high tank guards for protection in case of a fall, and these are not offered as accessories. The plastic tank is said to be durable, and the engine is safeguarded by low guards. The engine protection plate seems sturdy, but it does not extend very high, leaving the manifolds exposed. It would have made sense to have an additional protective plate like the one found on the Yamaha Tenere 700 or a higher engine guard. When it comes to necessary service and repairs, the air filter is located at the front between the handlebars and the tank. To access it, you simply need to loosen two screws and remove part of the fairing. The battery is located under the seat and is easily reachable. The onboard tools are a bit limited, so you may need your own tools for punctures. The biggest drawback in the F 900 GS's adventure capabilities is the tires, as they are one of the 20% of components carried over from the 850. These are only available in tubeless versions, which can pose a problem in rocky terrains. It would be beneficial to have tubular rims available as an option. Additionally, a chain guide is not included in the official range of accessories. However, BMW has introduced a small, practical feature for the seat. With the sports seat, the pillion seat transforms into a rubberized, textured surface ready for soft luggage. There is even a recess underneath the rear where the lashing strap can be securely attached.

BMW F 900 GS 2024 in touring mode

As a touring enduro, the BMW F 900 GS also needs to perform well on long journeys. Our test bikes were equipped with the tall windshield. However, at my height of 1.85 m, this caused significant turbulence around the sides of my helmet. Riders planning long-distance trips may need to consider an upgrade in this area. Despite this, the comfort of the F 900 GS seat is good, and it comes equipped with heated grips, a 12 V and USB socket, and handguards as standard. The optional cruise control is a feature I highly recommend. The seat is on the firm side, but still comfortable, and there is ample space to adjust your position easily. Lastly, the impressive payload capacity should be highlighted. The additional 14 kg compared to the 850 model has increased the payload to a respectable 226 kg.

Accessories and special equipment for the BMW F 900 GS 2024

In addition to the Dynamic package, which includes riding modes Pro and Quickshifter, and the Enduro Pro package with M Endurance chain, handlebar riser, and optional suspension, the BMW Enduro comes equipped with a range of special features and accessories from the factory. These include cruise control, keyless system, tire pressure display, navigation preparation, high windshield, high and low seat options, and a lowering kit. Additional accessories available include aluminum cases, sports seat, milled levers, kickstand, extra headlights, and an off-road side stand. The Enduro offers a deliberate reduction in features compared to the 850 GS model.

Price & test summary of the new BMW F 900 GS 2024

The new BMW F 900 GS stands out for its significant departure from its predecessor. It exudes a distinct character and seamlessly integrates into the realm of high-performance touring enduros with around 100 hp. The decision between a KTM 790 Adventure, Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, or BMW F 850 GS for off-road adventures was never as challenging as it is now with the F 900 GS. However, for those who still prefer the versatility of the 850, the F 900 GS Adventure maintains that concept, complete with the classic design. Overall, the 900 GS series offers a broader and more adaptable range than ever before. The F 900 GS boasts minimal weaknesses, with the only drawback being its somewhat deceptive price starting at €15,674 in Austria. For the full experience, essential features like the optional suspension and Enduro Pro package plus riding mode are a must. This pushes the price up to around €17,000 to €18,000, putting it on par with a Honda Africa Twin with DCT. The coming year will determine whether this price point hinders its success or if enthusiasts are willing to invest in this exceptional machine. BMW F 900 GS 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

Gregor

The F 900 GS feels completely different to its direct predecessor, the F 850 GS. Instead of a sedate all-rounder, it has become an agile touring enduro with considerable off-road capabilities. Uncomplicated yet powerful, it can be ridden on and off the beaten track. However, it only really comes into its own with a few accessories. The Enduro Pro package and Dynamic package are almost compulsory purchases, which also pushes up the price. All in all, a remarkable reorientation of BMW's in-line two-cylinder Enduro.
